When designing behavioural interventions you should address the factors to adoption. Context is variable but humans psychology is consistent. In my work these two often show up:

Normative pressure - Values, norms, and expectations shared among a social network slow adoption in order to fit into a broader social structure

Perceived switching cost - The gains of the designed change are not perceived subjectively higher than the losses of giving up old behavior

I always find it strange when I'm asked to explain something like I'm speaking to 5yo - most 5yo I know are sociopath's.
