I've tried it too. It works. Biochar is the best material to thrive microbes.

#Gardening in #clay #soil could be a disaster if you till it and leave it bare.

To improve clay soil, consider these effective strategies:

Add #Organic Matter:

Incorporate bulky organic materials like #compost, #manure, or leaf mold to enhance soil structure and #drainage.

Aerate the Soil:

Use tools like a broadfork to create air pockets, which helps alleviate compaction and improves drainage.

Use Gypsum: Apply #gypsum to promote flocculation of clay particles, improving soil texture and drainage.

#Mulch:

Apply organic mulch to retain #moisture and reduce soil cracking during dry periods.

Avoid Compaction:

Minimize foot traffic on wet soil to prevent further compaction.

Regularly repeat these practices for lasting improvement.

2. "The Book of Herbal #Wisdom" by Matthew Wood - Offers personal insights and case studies on #herbs.

3. "Medical #Herbalism" by David Hoffmann - Covers the science and practice of #herbal #medicine.

4. "Body Into Balance" by Maria Noel Groves - Focuses on holistic self-care with herbs.

5. "The Earthwise Herbal" series by Matthew Wood - Provides detailed information on new and old world medicinal plants.

There are many types of dovecote in England too but they are different in material and size.

Most of the are built by brick and some of them are wooden. As you live in a humid area you should provide a passive ventilation. The size of entrance holes is the significant part to avoid birds of prey. You need some top holes for light. The floor must be built by a material in order to clean manure easily.

It's better to build roof by a material which would not be noisy in rainy days. Surely you should build a feeder and a fresh water resource inside to make pigeons feel comfort.

I've mentioned the basics. Surely It's better to start in smale scale. If you have enough time to study try to find some paopers on English dovecotes.

Farming the Woods by Ken Mudge and Steve Gabriel explores the concept of #forest #farming, emphasizing that healthy forests can produce #food, #medicinal, and other non-timber products alongside traditional timber harvesting. The #book provides detailed guidance on cultivating high-value crops like American #ginseng, #shiitake #mushrooms, and ramps. It also covers historical perspectives, #climate adaptation, and #sustainable management practices for woodland spaces. This comprehensive resource is designed for farmers and gardeners interested in integrating #agroforestry and #permaculture into their practices.

The #Persian #windmills of #Nashtifan, located in northeastern #Iran, are among the oldest in the world, dating back over 1,000 years to ancient Persian times. These vertical-axis windmills are made from #clay, straw, and #wood, standing up to 65 feet tall. They harness the region's strong winds to grind grain into flour using a direct drive system without intermediary gears.

The windmills are positioned along a high earthen wall that not only supports them but also channels the wind effectively. Despite their age, some remain operational today, maintained by local custodian Ali Muhammed Etebari. In 2002, they were registered as a national #heritage site by Iran's Cultural Heritage Department.

I will be glad to cooperate. I have many resources in Persian. An introduction is needed to understand them in context. In central deserts of #Iran vegetation is not rich enough to nurture big cattles and there's not enough water to cultivate vast fields, #Persians use #Qanat as a sustainable irrigation system to overcome drylands and cultivate small scale gardens. #Gardening needs rich soil and a sustainable source of Nitrogen and Phosphorus is needed. As I mentioned drylands is not suitable for herding big animals so they decided to attract desert pigeons and tame them to nest in #Dovecotes. Persians use their manure as a fertilizer and a great source of phosphate to produce gunpowder. Pigeons control the pests and attract snakes and birds of prey. Finally snakes and birds of prey hunt the mice. It's a wise intervention in web of life without any destructive impact.

Life is too short, Many things to learn.

The Way Home: Tales From a Life Without #Technology by Mark Boyle is a memoir detailing his radical lifestyle choice to live entirely off the grid in rural #Ireland. Boyle abandons modern conveniences like #electricity and running water, opting instead for a life governed by nature's rhythms, where he grows #food, forages, and learns traditional skills. The #book serves as both a personal account and a manifesto on the implications of technology on #human life, prompting readers to reflect on their own dependencies and the value of #simplicity in modern living.

"Water for Every Farm" is a pioneering book by P.A. Yeomans about #sustainable land management and #water control techniques. The #book presents the Keyline Plan, a comprehensive approach to landscape development that focuses on water management, #soil #regeneration, and agricultural improvement.

Key aspects of the book include:

Sustainable Landscape Development: Provides a blueprint for regenerating soil and landscapes through strategic water control.

Innovative Agricultural Techniques: Introduces methods like on-farm #irrigation dams, chisel plows, and subsoil aerating rippers.

Soil #Fertility: Challenges traditional beliefs about soil formation, arguing against the notion that it takes 1,000 years to produce an inch of topsoil.

Practical Applications: Offers techniques for flood irrigation of undulating land without terracing, soil erosion healing, and carbon storage.

The book was first published in 1954 and has been updated multiple times, with the latest editions incorporating modern agricultural insights and measurement systems.

Practical Methods of #Soil #Conservation

1. Crop Rotation

Alternating different crops in the same field to maintain soil #fertility and prevent #nutrient depletion.

2. Cover Crops

Planting crops like #clover or rye between main crops to prevent erosion, improve soil structure, and enhance fertility.

3. Contour Plowing

Plowing along the natural contours of the land to reduce runoff and soil erosion.

4. Conservation Tillage

Reducing tillage to maintain soil structure and cover, minimizing erosion.

5. Terracing

Creating stepped levels on slopes to slow water runoff and reduce erosion.

6. Agroforestry

Integrating trees with crops to improve biodiversity and reduce erosion.
