I mean, yeah. But.. the fees on Liquid still make zaps uneconomical, a 160 sat fee on a zap won't work.
Aqua for instance is excellent, but the swaps needed to perform LN payments in the context of Zaps rules that out. Even native L-BTC "zaps" on Liquid onchain would still need at least 150+ sats per tx at 0.1 sat/vb min.

I do the same (and I suspect a good number do as well). The VPS simply acts as a reverse proxy.
What happens when it's down? Well.. nothing really. My node (like most nodes) also advertises an onion address. When I have the time, I'll simply switch the clearnet address.

Phoenix, Breez, Aqua, and countless other self-custody solutions already present an excellent UX for mainstream users.
But, you do lose a few things that always online custodial solutions offer like lightning addresses and zaps. Can be fixed/there are workarounds but we leave the "mainstream user" territory from there.
Yeah it gives the impression that it is a relatively easy or automated way to trace and deanonymize monero transactions, which isn't the case.
