Played around with what’s available in the open-source, decentralized AI space. Found Hugging Face, which seemed to be user friendly enough. So asked it to help locate research studies pertaining to toxicity of a certain plant. It came back with two studies published in reputable journals.

I couldn’t locate either reference, so, further asked for exact citation info. It responded with paper title, the journal date, Volume, issue, pages and even the Digital Object Identifier (DOI) for the research papers.

Hmm…..still couldn’t locate these papers. So went to the journals directly and manually looked up the pages that were given me. The papers found had nothing to do with the plant or toxicity issues that I asked about. So confronted the AI with this discrepancy. It then verified my conclusion that the research I asked for did not exist in these locations and went on to apologize for any confusion that occurred and explained that it must have been hallucinating.

Hmmm…I had heard a little bit about this phenomenon. However, it got me to wonder if this was an aspect of intelligence that I didn’t fully appreciate before. Authorities and experts often have answers to questions asked of them, even though plenty are extrapolations (educated guesses, without being stated as so) that aren’t always accurate. So AI seems to be doing the same…

OK, AI is new, it’s learning. However, that it doubled-down and went so far as to provide a fictitious citation including a bogus DOI to support its original claim is disturbing. OK, to be fair, human authorities and experts also often double-down when caught in a fabrication.

So, I guess the real difference between human and artificial intelligence (at this point in evolution) is that when caught fabricating info, AI at least states “I’m sorry, I was hallucinating”

Good on you for getting spectators (ie. me) off the sidelines to become participants.

Weird-ass Bug of the Week

Picking purple basil, not typically a hazardous pursuit, unless one of these guys is munching away on the underside of the leaf.

This Saddleback caterpillar (Acharia stimulea), looking more like a cartoon cat wearing sunglasses that has been run-over, is covered in venomous hairs. Accidentally brushing your hand against one really CENTERS ONE’S ATTENTION 🥵🤯 for about 15 min…..not recommended….

I asked Chat GPT the following vague question. "How many Mesquite trees can I grow on six acres of Mojave desert land with a annual average of 3 inches of rain?"

The Chatbot responded with the following.

ChatGPT2 : The number of Mesquite trees that can be grown on six acres of Mojave desert land with an annual average of 3 inches of rain will depend on several factors, including the spacing requirements of Mesquite trees and their water needs. Mesquite trees generally require well-drained soil and can tolerate arid conditions. However, they still need some water to establish and thrive. The average annual rainfall of 3 inches in the Mojave desert is relatively low, and additional irrigation might be necessary to support tree growth. To estimate the number of Mesquite trees, we need to consider the spacing requirements. On average, Mesquite trees require spacing of 20 to 30 feet apart to allow for their full growth and development. Let's assume a conservative spacing of 30 feet. To calculate the number of trees, we'll need to convert the acreage to square feet. One acre is equivalent to 43,560 square feet. Thus, six acres would be 6 x 43,560 = 261,360 square feet. Now, we can calculate the number of trees based on the spacing: Number of trees = Total square footage / Spacing requirement Number of trees = 261,360 square feet / 30 feet Number of trees ≈ 8712 Mesquite trees

Please note that this is a rough estimate and may vary depending on various factors such as the specific conditions of the land, the availability of water, and the health and growth characteristics of the Mesquite trees. It's also important to consider other factors such as access to irrigation, sunlight, and potential obstacles on the land. Consulting with local agricultural experts or arborists familiar with the Mojave desert conditions would be beneficial for a more accurate assessment and advice on Mesquite tree cultivation.

Let's see what i can do. Rain basins and Bio-char madness begin!

Made any progress in your mesquite planting?

They’re a big part of the ecosystem down in the tropics but can get a little over zealous with one’s attempt in establishing a food forest. So, How to turn the problem into the solution?…hmmm

An attempt to communicate with leaf-cutter ants (Atta cephalotes) via scent, not to decimate my food forest trees in Costa Rica…..making progress…I think…. nostr:npub1ru83erv4aqrw2thpqg2sh6l22vpx89z7ed2xselzn8mt3e3axutsz9vkej nostr:npub1073vwazf6l6d5d55xh2zy7ynkf3lgd7cdceq7qjepwen3s675p7qjrr9cw #permaculture
