Would you rather have the trait of invisibility or insensibility, or both, or neither, and why? šŸ” Not here to argue with the infinite opinions. Not here to ā€œbuild an audienceā€, but to literally use this for ā€œnotes and other stuffā€ (maybe I’m here to rebuild my sense of self … after a bunch of changes, experienced as traumatic) ā¤ļøā€šŸ©¹šŸ’ āœļø I would like these to not exist: - poverty - pollution in LCOL areas - factory farms, slaughterhouses - war

thank you for the tldr hehe…

Imma paste the VERY comprehensive and organized response from gpt below for posterity lol

gpt:

Yes, decentralized social media is absolutely possible without blockchain. While blockchain provides an immutable and trustless way to decentralize control, there are other methods for distributing power and preventing centralization.

Alternative Approaches to Decentralized Social Media

1. Federated Networks (e.g., ActivityPub, Mastodon)

• Uses independent servers (ā€œinstancesā€) that communicate with each other.

• Users can migrate between instances, reducing reliance on a single provider.

• Example: Mastodon (a Twitter-like platform using ActivityPub).

2. Peer-to-Peer (P2P) Networks (e.g., IPFS, Scuttlebutt, Nostr)

• Users exchange data directly or via distributed relays instead of a central server.

• Example: Nostr (relay-based, cryptographic keys for identity).

• Example: Scuttlebutt (offline-first, gossip protocol for syncing data).

3. Hybrid Models (Combination of Blockchain & Other Tech)

• Some platforms use blockchain for identity or payments but store content off-chain.

• Example: Farcaster (Ethereum-based identity but off-chain data storage).

• Example: Lens Protocol (Polygon-based social graph but uses off-chain storage for posts).

Does Blockchain Help?

Blockchain is useful for:

• Decentralized identity & ownership (e.g., NFTs for profiles/posts).

• Monetization without intermediaries (e.g., crypto tipping).

• Preventing censorship through immutable records (although full on-chain storage is expensive).

Does It Work Without Blockchain?

Yes! Platforms like Mastodon, Nostr, and Scuttlebutt prove that blockchain is not required for decentralized social media. Instead, they rely on cryptographic keys, relays, or federated networks to distribute control.

So, blockchain is one way to achieve decentralization, but not the only way.

lol no I don’t use tik tok … I’m talking about IG. It’s easy, the option is either under the ā€œā€¦ā€ or under the paper airplane icon

something i’ve been wanting to look up … is decentralized social media only possible due to blockchain technology? Is this why it hasn’t started earlier?

Putting this as a note like tying a string on the finger. 😐

#asknostr

it’s detailed and also abstract. abstract details 😲

Would really like to finish some of these works-in-progress… but … it doesn’t seem to be happening. Perplexity (AI) recommends setting achievable goals, and to do it for yourself.

It’s not like I’m trying to ā€œmake a livingā€ with art, or even trying to sell anything. It’s a hobby that has two parts to it. 1) a way to express myself and communicate something, and 2) something that I like to do and even therapeutic sometimes.

quite a few books have been written about it lately. I was aware of and read parts of Debt. Then more recently I read parts of Broken Money, which had the specifics.

… very interesting that Bitcoin was created in 2008/2009, in response to the financial crisis of that time

haha noo I was just browsing the ā€˜discover’ section of Nostr and saw your meme post about some Ghibli thing

well … An AR or VR experience entirely in the Ghibli art style would be very pleasant

I really like that in an article about human-made technology, like 50% is about nature.

ā€œAnd while robots are becoming more and more efficient and skilled over time, humans haven’t yet really built something as complex as a single human cell.ā€

… and a single seed, like a grass seed seems to be impossible to make.

I’ve been appreciating how sometimes my meals are almost entirely made up of seeds. Like, rice w/ beans, with corn, peas … and then with adding actual seeds to smoothies (chia, flax, sesame)

I’m confused … have you never used social media before? You realize that people post things and whoever wants to can comment right? (Or, click some type of ā€˜reaction’ button).

haha why is both ends of the bell curve having the same opinion. And no I did not see Grave of the Fireflies, because I don’t want to be depressed for the rest of my life.

just saw your comment! I use the Damus app. Someone on reddit shared a video tutorial by the guy who is coding Damus… I had to go to a website called zap.army and toggle on, so now I have the āš”ļø on posts and comments. Someone on reddit also suggested I use Coinos wallet, which is working. So now I just set it and forget it ā˜ŗļø just allow the magic piggy bank to be.
