I stopped Twitter and deleted it from my phone to put up an obstacle for myself, and I feel better for sure. Sometimes there is FOMO and perhaps missing “important” news items, but I have more time for things around me.

It is important to recognize, I think, the many flavors of social media and how they can all carry negative aspects to our psyche. Is #Nostr immune, perhaps an anti social social media…? I think not, although most people don’t “humble brag” on here, and many people spread encouragement eg to “touch grass”. I’m the end it is important to have contacts in the “real world”. At least with Nostr there is less of a feeling of being controlled by the algorithm.

2020 Oregon: well that didn’t go as planned. Dispensaries become major part of local economy. Fentanyl and drugs crisis abound. Population leaves. City becomes a toxic dump.

2023 Oregon: legalize mushrooms!

Sigh… I used to be in the “legalize it” camp. I consider myself mostly-libertarian. But then I saw drugs destroy #Portland. I recognize the pharmaceutical difference between pot and “hard” drugs, and I support individual choice. But how can one say something is “good” when you’ve witnessed it’s destructive powers on a society. I go down Sandy Blvd and it is nothing but burnt out RVs and decay. The only prosperous businesses are head shops.

I’m my bureaucratic organization they call firing/layoffs “corporate people movements” and managers say someone has “exited” or “left” rather than the old (also PC term for fired) “let go”

It’s a strange version of peer pressure where we end up all wanting to better ourselves. Since getting involved with this community I started #intermittentfasting and I’m now as healthy as I was in high school (minus junk food and incredible natural metabolism of youth). #fastr #health #grownostr 🫂 💜🤙

Great book and horrifying too.

I found it interesting when he describes hyperinflation in Vienna (I think chapter 2 or 3) and how poor the city folk were compared to the “rich” country folk because the country people had food and farming. The value of most urban labor became worthless overnight, and their social classes got tipped on its head.

Fascinating. I’ve heard this idea before or a similar hypothetical state called cascadia. Although it would be even more challenging politically, I would think it more appropriate to push upwards into Washington—just an example, but: dissolve (my beloved) Oregon along the cascade range, give Portland and the coast to WA where they are closely aligned with Seattle, and add Eastern OR + Eastern WA to Idaho. Importantly, there is a strong geographical boundary as well as political boundaries. (I guess a more politically appropriate way of stating this is to dissolve BOTH OR and WA and create a new state with Portland and Seattle and the coast, and then either create a new state for Eastern OR+WA or combine them with ID).

TL;DR State govts are supposed to reflect the populous, and it is clear that the Democrat party controls both OR and WA to the detriment of conservative leaning rural areas.

It’s very interesting to read and re-read this material. And I’m currently on a civil war kick, reading several novels on the topic (fav so far is hymns of the republic by SC Gwynne). I’m 1849 when Thoreau wrote Civil Disobedience, the union was tearing itself apart. The Democratic Party was fractured between North and South primarily on the issue of slavery, westward expansion was in full swing as we ravaged Indian lands and captured lands from Mexico. Thoreau mentions both topics in this paper and was clearly thinking deep about the atrocities his government was commiting and his role as a citizen of it. Was he “complicit” by taking no action to stop these sins? He could be read as an “activist” and is ready to go to jail for his beliefs, which is quite laudable, yet he also seems to be one of those people who just wants the government to leave him alone. I can relate to that mix of feelings.
