Great as Plato is, especially in small quotes on singular issues, his ideas led to some truly spectacular misfires in philosophy over the centuries. For example the Republic is a pretty horrific description of an idealised Mega State, ruled by so called philosopher-kings (read "experts").
Horrors such as Hobbes Leviathion and Bentham's Panopticon are direct spiritual descendents of Plato, as are modern entities like the WEF. We also owe a lot of modern, relativist confusion to Plato, or at the very least, a misguided reading.

If burning tyres was cheaper and legal, that's what miners would use and that's great. Mining optimises for efficiency, not for co2. Don't waste your time pandering to these morons, we're running the most important network in human history and we won't bend the knee to fiat academics and their apparatchiks in the media. Reject their premises.
I don't think there's anything else I've read in the genre quite as well written. Considering Simmons isn't even an exclusive science fiction writer, the concepts and the research are really quite astounding. Some of his other work is amazing too, Olympos series and more recently, The Terror. Real high art, literature science fiction 👌
A Canticle for Leibowitz by Walter M Miller Jr. - fascinating sci fi work exploring the relationship between Church and State (amongst other deeper motives) but not with the usual and very tired tropes of "church is evil and anti-science, iirrational, trust The Science" propaganda that we're used to expecting.
