Announcing Rev. Hodl's Applied Permaculture Class (and Fireside Bitcoin Meetup)

Learn how to apply permaculture to your lifestyle to build sovereignty, resilience, and wealth in this 3 hour class. I will detail how I apply the permaculture ethics and principles to homesteading, share how I build resilience in my wealth with the 8 forms of capital, and illuminate the connections between Bitcoin and permaculture. After the learning about applied permaculture, eat lunch prepared with fresh food grown on the homestead. After lunch I will give a full homestead tour showcasing living examples to see the ethics and principles of permaculture in action. You will leave with a full understanding of permaculture and the inspiration to apply it to your life in any situation.

Yes, but I want to keep this event simple for now. My main goal is providing a great experience for those who attend. I will be doing more classes and will definitely record/stream in the future.

No, we have been living off the homestead alone for 2 years now.

It's my job to do it. Applying permaculture to homesteading creates very efficient systems. If I'm spending my time doing one thing I'm often getting secondary and terciary yeilds. When I muck out the horse paddock I'm feeding my chickens, making compost and doing fly control all at once. There are many examples. But the key principles I use in almost every system are integrate rather than segregate, obtain a yeild (in more than one form of capital), catch and store energy, and observe and interact with nature.

Only got one picture at the Lake Satsoshi Retreat

I printed out some of my favorite pictures from around the homestead but I only had a bw laser printer so I used a highlighter to add some character to the the printouts.

I had the Bitcoin mining dehydrator on display and participated in the mining panel. It was a great time connecting with Bitcoiners from around the region, meeting some people in person for the first time, and deepening the relationships we've been working so hard to build in the bitcoin culture here in Michigan. It's events like these that will help to unify bitcoiners and kickstart the circular economy.

I've seen people use pressure canners. I don't have one that I'm willing to use. I do have some old compressor tanks that I'm going to use for the next build. I won't have time to mess with it for a few more months though.

I let one make open up and drop pollen for a week a couple seasons ago. Ended up with lots of seeds in the plants closest to it but not too bad with the others. Definitely still got lots of flower. I hope this time isnt as bad. I really wanted to have the pollen from this plant so I took the gamble. The trick will be preserving it for a few more weeks until I'm ready to pollinate a few branches.

No, not familiar with the grand rapids griffins.

Got myself a copy of stackchain magazine for my ever growing collection of Bitcoin art. So happy to find underground zines of Bitcoin culture. We are still early and this is a document to be squirreled away for safe keeping.

Thanks for following along! I want to spread the good word of Bitcoin and permaculture across the land so we can strive for evermore abundance.

Will my cannabis be seedy because I let a male start dropping pollen in the cannabis garden?

I let a male cannabis plant reach maturity in the rabbit colony cannabis garden. It was the last pineapple pomegranate seed I had so I wanted to let it produce pollen to save for breeding. I harvested the pollen and pulled the plant to feed to the rabbits. The female plants have just barely started to produce flowers so I don't think I'll end up with too many seeds (and if I do I kinda want them anyway). The rabbits sure do love to eat cannabis.

For those who have experience preserving pollen please point me in the direction of some good techniques.

Hell yeah! That feels good. What kind of breed do you make mostly? I tend to do simple pale ale grain bill just straight 2 row and a little Carmel 40 then play with hops and yeast. It gets crazy with all the variables. I haven't made any beer in couple years since I have fruit to work with now.

Finally found a chance to work on the wood gasifier proof of concept I started in the winter. I was able to get a weak flare on the exhaust end which will ultimately feed the generator, but on the air intake side I was able to get a very nice flare. The gas from this flare is probably way to dirty to run the generator without gumming it up, so I'll have to keep tweaking things until I can get the exhaust gas side to have better pressure. Definitely a took a step closer to mining Bitcoin with wood today though.

The plan for this first gasifier is to run an S9 at 980w by powering a 1.2kw generator with wood gas. It's built from mostly stuff I already had and about $60 in additional parts.

The next big adjustments will be to try high temperature silicone as a sealant and to adjust the shaker grate to catch more of the incoming air. Right now I think too much is blowing over the top of the fuel and not enough at the heart of the burn.

The proof of concept wood gasifier exploded...

I've been working on a simple (and cheap) wood gasifier to better understand the concept in hopes of building a larger one to provide auxiliary power to the homestead and to produce biochar while mining some Bitcoin at the same time.

The lid kept blowing off this one so I started clamping it on but that caused it to start leaking the smoke out.

I got some high temp silicone to see if that could form a gasket to keep the wood gas from leaking out. It worked well and I was able to get a clean flare from the filtered exhaust side of the gasifier. As soon as I had everything hooked up to the generator and pulled the cord just enough back pressure must have been created to blow the little metal trash can totally out of shape. A flame blasted out of the air intake and burned up my blower too. I had hopes of showing this contraption off at the Lake Satoshi Retreat but it's back to the drawing board for now.

You brew beer with em? I heard you can smoke em. Gonna try that. Thinking I'm going to try a yarrow peach cider with Cascade hops too.

Hop harvest time

We have two different varieties of hops growing around the homestead, Cascade and Willamette. From this initial planting to shade the house from the summer sun, the rhizomes have been transplanted all over, mostly in the food forest. Now that I have a dehydrator I am going through the effort to harvest as many as I can. In the past I would just take what I needed for a seasonal batch of beer or cider.
