Example of regrowth when young tree tops are broken to feed sheep

This mulberry tree is tough enough to withstand the breaking of it's main leader branch multiple times. Now it's starting to grow low and wide with much more branches the sheep can reach. This creates layers of food in the pasture, diversity in the diet, and shade as well. I didn't even plant the mulberry, it grew in on its own, all I have to do is continue breaking it down as it tries to grow tall.

Katahdin hair sheep wrapped up the third grazing loop and have begun the fourth pass of pastures here at the homestead.

The sheep quickly ate through the pastures in the yurt field. There is a sheep we call lonestar which refused to stay in the paddocks in this area. We were forced to keep the sheep moving a bit more quickly than we wanted to keep lonestar happy and stop her from teaching all the other sheep how to push under the fencing.

We sold off a pair of ram lambs as breeding stock which will help to reduce the pressure on the pastures now that the regrowth is starting to slow down. Last year we kept too many sheep on pasture late in the season and had to take the sheep to a neighbor's pasture to let ours rest for a couple weeks.

After 39 days the sheep returned to where they started to begin the 4th pass grazing the pastures for the season, once again in a heavily wooded paddock. I continued to break the tops of the sapling trees to offer more food for the sheep while the grass in the understory gets more established.

Now the sheep are working thier way through some of the best pasture on the homestead and will be heading up to the higher ground in a day or two.

This could be the yeast for the grow tent nostr:npub1f5pre6wl6ad87vr4hr5wppqq30sh58m4p33mthnjreh03qadcajs7gwt3z . Hopefully someone can work out how much CO2 you get from a measured drop in gravity from a ferment with x amount of sugar. It's not that difficult but it's been a long time since I did chemistry, I think it involves the mass of a mole and I only have a gerbil to weigh 😆
I love the idea of using the yeast to make alcohol and feed plants at the same time. Produce no waste, value the marginal and more principles could be found in a fermentation plant growing system. Awesome idea!
What are the temperatures like in the grow tent?
Yes, comfrey is part of the plan. Instead of rotating the rabbits in paddocks around the colony we want to create exclusion zones with perennials and annuals. We will open up an exclusion zone when it's mature, let the rabbits eat some but not kill it, then close it off again and open up a different zone. That way the rabbits will be able to keep their burrows in the same place but have access to fresh plants growing in the colony. Just need time to try it out.
The rabbits have eaten pretty much everything in the colony so now it's mostly exposed soil which isn't good. We have some ideas on how to keep more plants growing in the colony that we will hopefully try next year.
We haven't had much trouble with parasites, pests, or disease but the rabbits have only been in the colony for 3 seasons. We may run into trouble down the road.
I don't really know how to figure out the appropriate size for a colony. We just put rabbits into a system we already had to see what would happen and it worked.
Basically just used permaculture to tell us how to best utilize our rabbits and the area that we were growing the cannabis in.
The system utilizes a ton of permaculture principles:
Integrate rather than segregate (cannabis and rabbits in same place)
Value the marginal (used a failed hugel mound as burrows)
Slow and small solutions/change (built the system over the course of a couple years)
Obtain a yeild
Use and value renewable resources/materials (used fencing we already had)
Catch and store energy (positioned high on slope to manage nutrient flows)
No one is doing a nest right now so I'm doing one.
Permanent money leads to permanent culture. Come talk about permaculture and whatever else might come up.
nostr:npub13q8evu294dnt20vacfuagj5hy2agwhfr93el8h68qlg708zrxm8qnd6vpv getting the whole lamb from you so I don’t have anyone to split, cause I don’t have a space in freezer for the whole thing🤪
I'll hopefully have some lamb by the cut this winter again. Either way you should come to the meetup! Get a taste of that sweet sweet Michigan Bitcoin culture.
Was sipping some cider at sunset...

Dandelion Burdock Root Pear Cider. It was a popular flavor at the Lake Satoshi Retreat. One of the last bottles and I'll probably not have the correct circumstances to make this flavor again. Going to be hard not to hang onto the last couple bottles for a special occasion. Sweet and earthy.

That looks correct! Seems like they are edible but not that great...
It doesn't seem like either of those after looking them up. The stem seems too thin to be old boletes and dryads saddle does seem to have a round cap with centered stem. Thanks for the suggestions!
Unknown mushrooms

Anyone know what mushrooms these might be? Growing under a red maple tree surrounded by pines. Yellow/golden color with well defined cap and stem. Spongy gill pattern.

Boost more often! It's the on of the most powerful ways to get the valuable information spread far and wide. (This is a note to self as much as it is a call to action)
The rabbits are in a static colony about 2000sqft (rough estimate) were they are free to make burrows and breed. We keep 3 does and one buck and eat the rest as the get large enough. We feed them mostly weeds and prunings during the summer and supplement with a custom grain mix. Over the winter we try to harvest all but the breeding stock (they don't breed much over the winter) and feed mostly grain.
It's probably much larger than it needs to be but we use the space to grow the cannabis too. The cannabis was actually there first with the fencing and all. Then we modified it to introduce the rabbits. We could probably have more breeding stock in there if we wanted but for now we are able to feed what we have for essentially free with work we would already be doing around the homestead weeding and pruning. To add more would mean we would need to work extra to feed.
Join me at the homestead for a Fireside Bitcoin meetup Saturday, September 16 at 7pm in Baroda, MI

Anyone is encouraged to come hang out! This Bitcoin meetup is especially for those who are attending the Applied Permaculture class the following day, Sunday September 17, coming from far away. End your travel day around the fire surrounded by people who love both Bitcoin and permaculture. If your attending the class locally then come spend some extra time getting to know the others in the class. The concept of polycultures in permaculture doesn't just apply to plants! Build social capital, make new friends and talk about Bitcoin and Permaculture all evening!
If you want to camp there's plenty of space to park and pitch a tent. If camping isn't your thing then book the night in our 20ft yurt (2 guests)or reserve the whole house for a larger group (up to 6 guests).

Food Forest Harvest: Potatoes

This year I didn't plan on planting potatoes. In the past I've spent lots of time and effort for very little return, meager potato harvests.

This year, I found a bag of small seed potatoes from the last harvest I had forgotten about. I planted them quickly and left them on their own for the season.

Harvesting was quick and with all the weeds growing in the row, the rabbits in the rabbit colony cannabis garden got fed well. Now I have about 10lbs of potatoes from about an hours worth of work total between planting and harvesting. Plus, the row is prepped for planting garlic in the next week or two.

Come to the bitcoin meetup at the homestead on September 16. Baroda, MI. You can try what I grew last year. DM for more information...

Still plenty of rabbits left to harvest in the rabbit colony cannabis garden.

Simple tools and quick processing time is one of the many reasons I prefer rabbits over chickens.

They take just about any vegetation and turn it into meat. The organs tell the tale of a healthy diet too.

This one was a little smaller than I would have liked. Must have been extra fluffy and looked bigger than he was.

Been catching them with a net now instead of trapping so we can get exactly the ones we're after.

Will my cannabis be seedy because I let a male start dropping pollen in the cannabis garden?

https://i.imgur.com/xODJzkG.mp4
I let a male cannabis plant reach maturity in the rabbit colony cannabis garden. It was the last pineapple pomegranate seed I had so I wanted to let it produce pollen to save for breeding. I harvested the pollen and pulled the plant to feed to the rabbits. The female plants have just barely started to produce flowers so I don't think I'll end up with too many seeds (and if I do I kinda want them anyway). The rabbits sure do love to eat cannabis.
For those who have experience preserving pollen please point me in the direction of some good techniques.

Cannabis is starting to flower

The rabbits have left me with 9 plants in the cannabis garden rabbits colony.

Several are around 8ft tall. Not the largest plants I've grown but much better than last year. In the past I focused a lot on the cannabis garden but now I'm working on growing the most for the least time and expense possible.

The pink pistols are starting to show on a few of the plants now. These will be the ones I attempt to pollinate.
If you're interested in how I apply permaculture in the rabbit colony cannabis garden I will be showcasing it on the field study portion of the Applied Permaculture class I will be teaching here at the homestead on September 17th.
