My good friend and Permaculture pleb nostr:npub1d9wtu0sv4mmar0f4lau28rnnzxru9ax49wdu5kykxl6j7r7t5y3qhep3wd and I are at bitcoin park for nostrville. We just got him setup on nostr...
buy him a beer if your feeling generous! He's got a wealth of permaculture knowledge and experience and he's looking forward to sharing it on nostr!
Thanks! I'm sure you'll find your way to the homestear one day for one reason or another to see it in action. Things are in good shape for the most part but with so many moving parts and irons in the fire there is always something broken waiting to be fixed and piles of materials leftover from projects here and there.
Haflinger draft ponies giving wagon rides; working for their hay.

We got out haflinger horses for several reasons, one to enjoy them recreationally, two as a way to increase our resilience at the homestead, and three to generate cash flow. The past several years (covid nonsense mostly) have impeded our ability to use the horses to make money but this year we were able to realize our business with the horses.

The largest input we have at the homestead is hay, and thankfully we are able to source it locally, as close as directly across the street. The horses do a great job of converting hay into fertility we can easily utilize but it is still expensive. Now, the horses are paying for their hay with the work they do giving wagon rides and we still get use the manure they produce to feed our chickens, as well as fertilize gardens and pastures.

We gather the manure and feed it to our chickens. They scratch and turn it, making it into compost quickly. They find fly larvae in the manure, which provides protein for them to produce high quality eggs. By eating the larvae, the fly pressure is also reduced for the horses.

Once the chickens process the manure, we use it to grow out annual vegetables and cannabis. The year we had more compost than we could use in the gardens and we spread it on a weak pasture.

Over time the horses have transformed from an expensive hobby to an essential system on the homestead. The produce cash flow, they have the ability to work, and the generate a nutrient flow that produces bountiful growth.

Hard to imagine... But did those who built the ancient megaliths have electricity? Regardless, I think those people could have run nodes and done some hashing.
If 1M sats is small what's a large channel?
I have had one of the toughest years with my business since I started 7 years ago, all while the cost of everyday expenses is going up faster and faster. I too would be in a very tough situation if I had not been saving in Bitcoin and diversifying my time into other forms of capital, living capital being the best example. Growing food has offered the most bang for the buck outside of Bitcoin for staying afloat in a continually more challenging financial environment.

Probably not the answer your looking for, but the local Bitcoin meetup is the best way to find businesses that accept Bitcoin.

#asknostr
The only experience I have with buying miners is buying directly from people I know and trust and buying from kaboom racks. I don't know enough about mining equipment or the mining market to know if I was getting a high quality miner or getting a good deal on eBay.
I think kaboom racks is a safe place to buy miners as a home mining pleb.

Culling extra roosters and stocking up on chicken soup

We finally got an egg incubator this year to start rebuilding our chicken flock. A fox cleaned us out a few years ago and we thought we could rebuild the flock by the broody hens hatching eggs. It didn't work out, we only ended up with a handful of chicks that would make it to maturity. So we got an incubator to hatch some more chicks. With the hens came roosters as well. We let them grow all summer and now the time has come to turn them into chicken soup.

Seven roosters skinned and rested in the fridge for a week, good for over 15lbs of meat (no skin). Pressure cooked and soon to be pressure canned into a few gallons of soup. Resting them in the fridge seems to have done well for the texture of the meat. In my experience, I find pressure cooked meat to be a little more tough, chewy and dry than I expect. These chickens turned out better than past chicken soup batches. Maybe the extended resting time had something to do with it.

I don't want success, I want succession. One thing leading to the next for generations beyond me. I can only hope someone picks up where I left off. I romanticize the idea that this was or will be the way of the world at some point. People building something that could only be completed by the next generation and that generation understanding the gift they've been given of the work of those that came before them.
I sometimes wonder if the striving is what I'm after and not the ultimate achievement. This is why focusing on achieving my highest ideal is important along with the continuous reevaluation of what the highest ideal is as I gain experience and knowledge throughout life. If I focus on the ideal, it is impossible to achieve or perfect but continuously possible to improve upon, continuous striving. Hopefully the financial capital Bitcoin provides will only create freedom to focus more on my ideals and less on achievement of idea of financial success.
The rocket mass heater is definitely the real deal. Easily the most bang for the buck out of anything I've built. It's been working flawlessly for years now. I have to vacuum out the ash once a year and I do sweep the chimney but honestly I don't think its ever really been necessary. The most creosote build up I've seen was maybe 1/16-1/8in on an 8in chimney. Plus the exhaust gas is never hot enough to ignite it. I burn some punky ass wood in there too. I upgraded the insulation on the riser and rebuilt the burn chamber at the same time. A few of the fire bricks cracked, I think because I was burning it too hot at first. It really is a fantastic technology that anyone with the right situation to have one, should.
When it comes to manufacturing RMH, the core could be done but the mass probably has to be custom built. The core isn't really hard to build anyway and it's much more forgiving than the books make it out to be in my experience.
I don't see why it wouldn't work, instead of the core of the RMH replace with solar powed Asics, instead of venting outside vent to a location where you need heat the most and let the mass release some heat at night when the asics aren't running. For it to be effective, you would need to generate more heat than you needed during the day and figure out how to charge the mass with it.
