Dear Bitcoiners on #nostr,

For some, when you see or hear someone say they are a progressive/left bitcoiner, some of you lead to attacks, questioning and probing, assuming:

“pffft that’s not possible, how stupid can you be!”

I’ve been at this for over 3 years now. What you should do is take a step back, and realize how incredible it is that a progressive probably broke ranks heavily (think Liz Warren, greenpeace, woke police etc etc) to learn about and advocate for bitcoin. That’s really cool and a hard thing to do! Tribalism is deep and can produce awful things that get in the way of independent thought, truth, and progress.

Most progressives in bitcoin are not your caricature of the modern progressive that wants big government control, censorship, against free speech, MMT, etc etc. they’re bitcoiners that advocate for social change and progress, the true essence of the word, and believe there is a role Bitcoin can play in improving the lives of everyone, especially those downtrodden by society and the government. And those of us on the left in Bitcoin are socially liberal - we’re anti-war, pro lgbtqia+, pro women and freedom, and pro people gaining true financial freedom and prosperity.

Progressive bitcoiner does not equal democrat foot-soldier

Hell, most of us are politically homeless, as are you probably.

And at the end of the day these political labels can paint a bit of a picture but are inadequate at best, harmful at worst.

Thanks for coming to my TED talk

I agree that it's not a good idea to "ambush" newcomers, regardless of their political views.

I also don't think we should just overlook people proclaiming to be for everything that's good and holy while advocating for actions that historically have always led to the very opposite outcome.

Cognitive dissonance needs to be called out, hopefully without trying to embarrass the people suffering from it.

Btw, it seems that you might be "downgraded" in Youtube. They did the same thing to Jordan Peterson, when searching with the name you get suggested other things to search for:

At first I thought that ok, maybe that maC demarco guy is just more popular, but then I searched for "max demarco bitcoin" and YT is just offering "mac demarco bitcoin" as the thing to search.

It isn't a full shadow ban as you do show up in search results as expected (just not in those suggestions). I guess YT really doesn't want to be suggesting bitcoin content...

"They do not present or explain the reasons, why society would choose Bitcoin for this purpose." 😄

When will you stop hiding these reasons?! There must be some nefarious conspiracy that makes you withhold this secret information from the people!

This sounds to my (totally non-educated) ear as a potential misunderstanding. These kinds of misunderstanding are quite common even among professionals, as they are often trained to work and think within one jurisdiction and not look at the big picture - which can be totally different.

I've been there, almost listened to the advice of "certified professionals", and I've been able to avoid costly mistakes by being extremely meticulous and searching for better advisors until someone really knows what they're talking about.

That part you copied seems to be about an _existing_ tax liability that just needs to be settled at some point. Moving switches that "some point" to be immediate, as they don't let you postpone it into the future after you leave. If so, it's not an exit tax, just "settling current accounts".

There is a similar confusing reference to an "exit tax" in this video:

https://youtu.be/XD_97P_L7GA?t=285

...where it seems that _existing_ profits of a company are taxed when the company exits the UK. That's understandable and not an "exit tax" - just the settlement of existing liabilities at that moment. Those taxes would have been due anyway, just later.

I don't see anything about extra taxes incurred because of exiting, except in those future plans.

Again, I might be wrong about any of this, but so can the "professionals" - worth checking thoroughly with multiple professionals before you pay too much!

New profile picture! Many others have laser eyes till 100k, but idk why so bearish? I have lightning eyes till ∞/21m 😃 🚀

Slightly annoyed that I had to do this with 1987 technology (gif), as apparently SVG animations are not that well supported with Nostr clients... oh well. At least I got the profile pic file size down to ~300kb, so this shouldn't burden the relays too much.

Now back to work on what I was supposed to be doing this whole time: Sovereign Landing... structured procrastination ftw I guess?

Anything that doesn't fit an extremely narrow Overton window of "politically acceptable thought" is now far right. Just have to learn to ignore it, like all those other ridiculous labels.

I hope I'm not ruining the positive spirit... just because it's in your head doesn't prevent the state from claiming the right to tax it, so I think their questions are valid - even though they don't understand the tech.

I'm sure you're probably already aware of this. Just thought I'd mention this for others - too many examples of people paying a heavy price for getting these things wrong.

Good thing you're getting out in time and the UK doesn't (yet) have an exit tax!

It will be what the internet was supposed to be before it was taken captive by the Big Tech. Right now it is free social media.

If you're asking for permission (implicitly or explicitly) you're doing it wrong. Just prosper!

Very good points. These, and the follow-up points, didn't fully click for me before I read the Free Private Cities book.

It lays out a clear, practical way for ending these kinds of "group A vs. group B" fights - there shouldn't be a "one size fits all" solution because there can't be one.

We need many different kinds of solutions, and if the socialists want their paradise, they too can have one!

In fact, they can have as many as they need to find the magic formula that won't fail like the 100+ previous socialist experiments.

Just don't force me to live in any of those experiments.

https://free-cities.org/free-private-cities-third-edition/

Definitely agree! I'd also add that for many, the best answer might be living in a few different places. I'm hoping to bring down the cost (both in money and hassle) of this lifestyle with Sovereign Landing!

The deletion seems to work for me, can't see it. I understand that it's relay-dependent and that technically the internet never forgets anything (with certainty), but it's basic UI wisdom to always offer the user the ability to undo things.

I accidentally reposted one of my own posts in Primal just after posting it. Not a biggie but I didn't like it as that can come across as spammy... can't unpress that button 😞

If you say you're not happy with taxation in your country, the politicians are quick to judge you as "selfish" or even "enemy of the poor".

This is a trick to try to turn reality on its head. Let's disassemble this lie!

This is a distillation of the main points from a blog post I wrote - I recommend you read the whole blog post, but you can use this note as a preview!

https://www.sovereignlanding.com/high-future-preference/morals-of-opting-out-the-system/

The state claims to exist for the poor and the weak, but in reality all they have is a giant resource-destroying machine. Real time, money and energy is being expropriated from real people.

A large part of those resources gets ground to nothing. A worse scenario is that those resources don't go "for nothing", but get used for actively bad purposes - perhaps even for murdering people.

Even when the resources are not used for evil purposes, there are people actively benefiting from them being "wasted". Don't mistake all of it to just be incompetence!

When you opt out of this system or even speak out against it, the proponents of this machinery will loudly judge you as an enemy of the poor. Be careful not to fall into that trap!

But what if everyone opted out of the system? Clearly that wouldn't be any kind of solution for the poor who really are in need of help. How do we solve this?

The details are beyond the scope of this post, but they have been described in an excellent way by Titus Gebel in his book Free Private Cities: https://free-cities.org/free-private-cities-third-edition/

In a nutshell: all societies have always had systems to help the people in need. They haven't always been perfect, but neither is the current system. We can do better!

All we need to do is look back in history to find examples of what worked before the government decided to "help". They've just hijacked systems that worked quite well before without any violent intervention.

It is important to note that artificially supporting the current system isn't a "moral good". Sacrificing your life energy for a dysfunctional system isn't a moral act, it is just waste.

The only morally questionable act is supporting these systems. They are starting to resemble the ideas that the Soviet Union was built on.

Those ideas weren't bad because they were implemented in a wrong place - they simply do not work, period. You can't wait for the politicians to get this though. No one is coming to save you - you need to act!

Yet contracts are a thing, and government doesn't need to get involved in those. I haven't yet looked at the contents of the original post, but private arbitration has been a thing forever and is widely being used between businesses.

I hope you skipped the y2k stuff 😃

Yeah the current situation seems bleak when contrasted with their vision, but we're still very early with this stuff. The general trend seems to be going how they describe, albeit slowly. Yes the nation states are clinging onto their power, but I can still very easily see them diminishing in relative importance. Have patience. "They" can't really afford that, but we can.

Good to see you writing! I guess we may have bit of the same problem, the post lengths getting out of hand 😄

While you correctly recognize the problem as "politics", I think the real problem is just caused by the current form of democracy:

People who don't have a stake in things can vote on how the resources get used!

Ultimately that's what's causing these problems.

You focus on UK politics, but of course these issues are not UK specific. These exact same problems can be seen all around the Western world (and beyond, but mostly in "the west").

You do need to consider when and how you ask for payment. If you ask for a donation after the content has been consumed, people are not used to paying and many won't. Then again, we have these things called zaps in Nostr and many do voluntarily click that button, so...

Also, I just paid $25 for an audiobook voluntarily, in Kickstarter. I wasn't forced to pay, and I don't even have the product yet. The problem isn't that people wouldn't be willing to pay for good content.
