nostr:npub126ntw5mnermmj0znhjhgdk8lh2af72sm8qfzq48umdlnhaj9kuns3le9ll will be willing to help, and it’s definitely possible to do, but has multiple steps

Hey nostr:npub1ktnh0jp8ugppt6g94wgtdkqatwztuklkdj2yec6fgd2qk33w5d3q3z7kn3 feel free to hop into our Telegram chat for assistance. As Dread mentioned, it's not super easy but can absolutely be done. https://t.me/start9_labs

You absolutely can, though we do not recommend using external drives with the Pi unless you have a 5W power supply (not the default Pi power supply), the SSD is self powered or uses a powered USB hub, and the cord connecting the SSD to the Pi is very high quality.

This is becuase the Raspberry Pi 4 is notorious for not providing enoguh power to the external SSD, which can lead to unreliability or even data corruption. That is why Start9, Umbrel, MyNode, etc have all moved away from the Pi to other hardware.

HOWEVER, the Pi is perfectly fine if you do not use an external SSD. Instead, we recommend using a 128GB or 256GB high endurance microSD card, no SSD at all. Start9's Server Lite is exactly that, a Raspberry Pi 4 (8GB) running entitely off the microSD card. Pretty cool.

Obviously, you cannot fit the entire Bitcoin blockchain on 256GB, which means your full node will be running pruned, which is perfectly fine. It will prohibit you from running Electrs and Mempool, that's it. Everything else on the Martketplace will work great, including LND, Core Lightning, BTCPay server, etc, etc

nostr:npub126ntw5mnermmj0znhjhgdk8lh2af72sm8qfzq48umdlnhaj9kuns3le9ll any plans for non-Tor connections to a Start9 OS server?

Well, currently you can connect via IP or .local while on the LAN. But if you're talking about remote connectivity besides Tor, that is coming in our next major release, v0.4.0. No timeline

You can absolutely use whatever external SSD setup you want, we just don't recommend it. And neither does Umbrel, that's why they came out with the non-Pi Umbrel Home, advertising it as a solution to the known issues with the Raspberry Pi.

Using external SSDs with the Pi might might go well, or it might not, or it might go well for a while and then bam, disk corruption.

Electrs and Mempool are possible if you use an external SSD.

The Server Lite runs entirely off a high endurance microSD card, which can't fit the whole Bitcoin blockchain or tx indexes, and those are necessary for electrs and Mempool. That's why it's only $199.

It is not recommended to use a Pi with an external SSD unless the SSD has its own power supply and the cord connecting it to the Pi is very high quality.

There is a reason why Start9, MyNode, Umbrel, Ronin Dojo, and others have come out with non-Pi devices, and why Start9 recommends installing StartOS on an old laptop or mini PC for DIY. It's because the Pi just barely delivers enough power to the SSD, so any minor fluctuation in power could result in glitchyb behavior or even disk corruption and loss of data.

A Pi without an SSD work just fine, but then has the limitation of storage space, making certain services unusuable. But many people don't care about electrs or Mempool, so it's perfect for them!

Let us know if you need any assistance. We have a dev chats on Matrix and Telegrams with the team and community, very helpful.

We recommend switching your dependent services to use Bitcoin Core instead of Bitcoin Proxy in their config settings, and then uninstall Bitcoin Proxy.

🎉 0.3.4.3 is live with meaningful improvements to Tor reliability.

Bitcoin version 25 is also live! This version of Bitcoin obsoletes Bitcoin Proxy, which has now been removed from the Marketplace.

As always, make a backup before updating. Enjoy!

nostr:npub126ntw5mnermmj0znhjhgdk8lh2af72sm8qfzq48umdlnhaj9kuns3le9ll is there a nostr wallet connect service for Embassy OS ? If not, is it in the plans for the future? 🔮

Looks like the nostr:npub1getal6ykt05fsz5nqu4uld09nfj3y3qxmv8crys4aeut53unfvlqr80nfm team only did this for Umbrel. We are more than happy to assist their team package it for StartOS as well. Let us know!

When is the next round of hires for the community support position?

#Jobstr

#Bitcoin

#CustomerService

Likely early 2024. We had a great turnout for this first round and actually had to say no to many qualified candidate. Good problem to have I suppose, but not easy/fun.

📣 Announcing SimpleX Server (https://simplex.chat/) for StartOS, now available on the Start9 Registry 📣

Brought to you by #[0] 👏

TLDR: SimpleX might be the most promising solution to simple, private, decentralized messaging yet!

So far, it does direct messages, group messages, calls, voice messages, and video calls, and everything is e2e-encrypted and can be self-hosted.

Like Nostr, SimpleX is neither P2P nor federated. It uses servers to relay messages. You define which server to use for receiving messages, and your contacts define which server to use for receiving messages. Every conversation is likely to use 2 different servers!

Servers are simple relays adhering to the SMP protocol; they do not store profiles, contacts, or groups, and they only retain messages until they are delivered to clients. Read about the SMP protocol here: https://github.com/simplex-chat/simplexmq/blob/stable/protocol/simplex-messaging.md

SimpleX was designed with Tor servers in mind, and since servers do not connect to each other, there are no issues with interoperability: https://simplex.chat/docs/guide/privacy-security.html#using-tor
