Complete newb question… why is it good to plug in a mining rig on a day when the fees exceed the reward? Seems counterintuitive to me…
Just got done listening to it and really liked it. Love that he too is LGBTQ “family”. I think we understand these issues in more personal ways than other folks.
BTW… Having read a bit of the TrustNet docs… NIP-68 & 69 mirror it in many ways - only you can’t give a trust weight to the other person/account. That was somewhat intentional because it adds a layer of complexity which has limited value in an environment like Nostr. And TrustNet seems to focus more on P2P where there’s a limited (rather than enormous) number of people who could be trusted. When you have a huge number of people who you can trust I don’t see the value in partial trusts. Just pick the ones you _really_ trust.
One area where I’m thinking we could mirror TrustNet more is the Trust Area idea. So you only trust someone’s content moderation labels in a particular area of moderation. I think that’s too complex for end users but could be implemented by folks like relays who have their own formulas.
“Good enough is good enough.”
I heard that phrase a year or two ago and honestly it changed my life. It’s a “glass half full” way of looking at the world.
Don’t worry about the world. Worry about your place in it. And just shoot for “good enough”, not perfection.
I’m fine with the app dropping connections to the relays when it’s not in the foreground. (In fact I think that’s probably how it should work - or at least limit connections to them). But what I’ve noticed with Damus and other apps (I’m running betas for Damus, Nostur & Nos) is that when the apps go from background to foreground they don’t reconnect to the relays. To me that’s the biggest problem. I wait a few seconds, then kill the app and restart it and everything is great.
Two First Amendment lawyers I can strongly recommend are (in no particular order)…
Corey Silverstein
Larry Walters
Both are easy to talk to and I believe the first consultation is free. (Or maybe they charge $1 to make it official).
Paying a little bit now for advice and an airtight TOS could save you a bundle down the road (not to mention the headaches). But one advantage you have over their other clients is you don’t have to deal with Visa & Mastercard.
I know another lawyer who I’d recommend as well, but I think he’s mostly a litigator. Corey & Larry are probably better for the contractual stuff.
That reminds me - it might be a good idea to join the Free Speech Coalition. https://www.freespeechcoalition.com They are the group that fights legal battles in the courts for the porn industry. Joining shows you’re serious about doing things right and in the past there have been times when being a member gives you additional legal coverage since while they’re fighting it out they often get court orders that exempt their members until the case is over.
There’s also the ASACP - which is specifically aimed at combatting CSAM. But my opinion of them is pretty low. (They refused to give input on content moderation for Nostr).
Have you consulted a lawyer? Running a legal creator site is easier said than done. Adult content makes it 10x more complicated. Since you’re literally hosting the content and controlling access to it, you’ll be liable. If you need recommendations for good First Amendment lawyers with exactly this kind of experience, I can give some names.
Use DNS over HTTPS (DoH) and only connect to relays that have HSTS enabled (prevents anyone from proxying your connection).
Sadly it’s not. But I’m hoping for the same fate as Clubhouse… Lots of anticipation followed by “eh… whatever…” When Bluesky gets to that point Nostr will hopefully have figured out its onboarding issues.
Thing is, unless we have a workable solution to content moderation, that will be the experience on Nostr as well. I’ve already gotten a death threat here. It’s why #[4] & I are trying to get a censorship resistant version of content moderation approved (NIPs 68 & 69). Everyone here is so “don’t censor anything”… Until they encounter truly dark content. Some of us just experience it more than others.
To clarify… he had to click to view HIS OWN images!!
A colleague/mentor of mine posted some porn on Bluesky and it was immediately flagged and required you to click to view. So yeah, not really a platform I care a lot about.
One complication I just realized…
Right now a pornstar can give his platform(s) OAuth authorization to do automated posts to his Twitter account and revoke that right any time he likes.
But in the world of Nostr he’s unlikely to have the technical ability to issue delegated keys. It’s just too complicated and involves repeatedly having to issue keys.
What’s the solution other than the pornstar giving over his private key and just trusting the platform to keep it safe and not abuse it?
Right. People lists are well defined, but not really being put to good use.
In Nos I’d suggest you put them in the same drop-down as “extended network”. That’s basically a drop down that filters the scope of what’s presented.
But IMHO they should also be listed on the person’s profile page (provided there are publicly listed people on the list). When a list is presented the user should have the option of “list members” and “view as feed”.
One thing I don’t think is defined is following or subscribing to someone else’s people feed.
We are the government. We voted for it. What it does, it does in our name.
I have issues with that title but “we” isn’t one of them.
Actually, that made me think… Just as we use nostr:
That would make it clear in situations like a business card which is which since they both look the same.
Not sure the type is big enough. Definitely print out a sample to check (and don't make people squint.)
#[2] had said “takes a minute”. I didn’t know whether he meant a literal 60 seconds or he meant “takes a brief moment”. If it’s the latter it’s no big deal.
I’d still love to see benchmarks though.
When you basically pay so your name isn’t visible - the name of some privacy company is visible instead. They’re supposed to forward emails to you, etc.
