While traveling over the weekend, I was asked what Ham Radio was. It is a good question, and I didn't have a simple answer. I asked ChatGPT to give me a summary. This is pretty good:

I make hot sauce, hot spice powder, smoke them, ferment them, etc. I also give peppers to friends and neighbors. I like to see how many peppers I can grow 🤣

Just transferred 40 pepper plants to grow bags, put down mulch in the backyard, got the wicking gardens operational, and planted some herbs in the raised gardens. We are going to be sore tomorrow after hauling soil, rocks, and mulch.

I grow in cloth grow bags in a trough with water that allows wicking. Each season, I then dehydrate on low heat in a smoker. I end up with pounds and pounds of dehydrated peppers every season. These are from peppers I picked November 2024 (last year)

Made a new batch or hot sauce to get me through the next week or two 🤣 Home grown and smoked ghost peppers, red bell pepper, carrots, cranberries, and blue agave.

I like combining things I love. Electronics, ham radio, software development, and water sports (like surfing and prone paddling). In this case, I am using ham radio's APRS for tracking me while out doing long distance prone paddling. It is good for my wife to know where to send the Coast Guard to pull out my body if I drown 🤣. The BTECH - BaoFeng UV-PRO is a great radio since it has KISS mode to interface for APRS. I used APRSDroid on my phone for the software to drive it all.

Crappy cellphone video since I was keeping my distance. This was from about 6:30am this morning just over the dunes from Billy Mitchell. Tourists scared the deer away. But before they took off, they were frolicking in the ocean. I thought that they were dogs hopping around and playing. I finally took my phone out as they were leaving. Was fun to watch

No, cellular has the same problem as cable since fiber is needed to the towers.

Anybody have a recommendation for a hotspot "appliance" I can use to give people free access to internet? This is for emergency preparedness, when terrestrial inrernet is down, our community radio station wants people to allow people to park in our parking lot to be able to hit internet, do calling over WiFi, etc. We have starlink, but on our island, cable providers are often down because of cable cuts, etc. We need to have logging and to have terms and conditions accepting to allow access.
