It depends on how they delete it. There's no real delete on nostr. You can send a new request and ask to be forgotten by the ecosystem but it's just a request.
The old data lives on as long as it's on some relays and clients but if relays respect the wish and delete the events from their databases then the notes can be gone.
Kind of like emails. Once you send them out you're not in control of them anymore but can ask nicely to delete the copies.

Following feed shows only the people you directly follow.
Global feed shows all the events that you have configured Iris to accept.
You can adjust your feed experience by setting the following distance limit (or turn it off entirely) from Settings / Social network. Your network starts from you and who you follow and goes forward from there.
You can also adjust the minimum amount of followers required per user at the maximum followed distance you have set that Iris will include in the feed. These settings apply to all your feeds (both Following and Global).
The Social network -settings are stored locally only. If you have multiple clients they are not synced between clients.

Have you tried to start muting from the notifications view and gradually work your way up to the main thread.
You could try a cmd/ctrl + R refresh on the browser or quit & restart the app to refresh the cache and get the latest updates since the thread was already some hours ago.

Now you have more options to fine-tune your feed experience. Notice that it's a local setting only (if you're using multiple clients).

Just to recap a bit:

We did a lot of changes yesterday so things may fall off at times. Thanks for the heads up!
Iris supports many formats:
You could try cmd/ctrl + R to force a refresh. Usually helps. There were a lot of updates yesterday.
Delete account feature on Account settings resets your profile and following, and disables login to Iris. If you want to come back after deleting your account, sign up again and create a new account.
You can find users' npub in the menu if you need it. The iris.to/npub URL syntax works, too.
