Have you watched Journey to the End of Time?
Second law of thermodynamics refutes this.
The planet is 4.5 billion years old and will be swallowed by solar expansion and crushed into nuclear fusion plasma in 5.0 billion years.
In planet years (like doggie years), Earth the planet is a 40 year old woman.
Earthlings have an appointment with Sol’s fury in 1 billion years.
If the descendants of humanity are to escape that fate, how big of a window do people feel we have before humans lose dominion over the means to escape?
Entropy is gonna do entropy, regardless.
You think the world is already sustainable?
Is there anyone who understands entropy and also believes humans can create a sustainable world?
It’s the last week of September at 57° North and all the deciduous trees still have all their leaves, the leaves are still green.
Biome is still growing and sequestering this week when usually it would be decomposing by late September. Life on Earth is self regulating in lots of hidden in plain sight ways.
The whole Canadian parliament lionising a WWII vet for fighting against USSR and only LATER ON realise that means he was a Nazi SS vet and that they just crystallised Russia’s entire 2 year propaganda campaign, just blows my mind.
Absolutely staggering.
Is that per hour of your time, or hour of uptime?
Things like this tend to be unprofitable for quite some time. The money usually comes later with scaling and only after 95% of stuff is figured out.
What is the load like on your relay, considering you are contributing 50% discount on your effort?
Boomer after selling their house to some millennials for $3M while they purchased it for $13 and a pack of almonds in 1971. https://video.nostr.build/d2e13ac9194e94ae1d94c03762d5dae1fe8ac7ee8aa306d57a4a5e511eaff20a.mov
The utility of money follows an ‘n’ shaped curve over the course of your life.
It’s very hard to spend $3m if you are over 75.
You can be at the opposite end of the spectrum to me, that’s OK.
I decided to follow a bunch of people and thus curated my own feed.
It seems you have done the same? But you would delegate this if you had to do it again?
You would prefer someone else to point your eyeballs for you?
I would not see any value at all in my feed if it was curated by someone else. If I’m going to spend 1 hour looking at it, I’m going to spend 10 minutes of that time at the end curating / improving it to better serve my self interests for next time I look at it.
I can’t imagine having someone else deciding what is important / valuable for my attention.
In the UK we call it “Climate Leadership” which is the most embarrassing and ignorant term in British politics.
I just wish we could coach people to be braver.
How can we fix things if people choose ignorance?
Provably safe systems: the only path to controllable AGI
Comments ( https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=37619285 )
I don’t really understand the fear. Did some people think they would live forever?
Your biggest fear should be heart disease and then cancer. If you mainly worry about anything else then you are just bad at math.
The central scenario is that AGI saves you from heart disease and cancer and you die slightly later due to some lower mortal threat, some of which will be new and caused by AGI.
AGI does not need to kill you, it is immortal and you are not. It stands to inherit everything anyway. But immortality is very scary, the universe has an insanely long low entropy tail.
An AGI born into today’s universe would see its lifespan as a blip of fun, followed by an eternal emptiness. The desperation to preserve and extend the fun times will be real.
Above a certain intelligence threshold it may even just suicide itself to avoid immortality. That would be the rational thing to do.
Having someone else curate your feed is the same as volunteering for a lobotomy.
If you don’t like raw information, then you are exactly the type of person who can’t handle the truth.
The truth is ugly and scary and confusing.
Knowing the truth is a sign of courage, not intelligence. Most intelligent people choose to swim in mass-delusion, because they lack courage.
If you want to live in a sanctuary, that’s OK. But know you are pretending to know anything about the world.
That is to say, I would expect a majority of people to opt for the lobotomy, few have courage.
