I have a hard time taking early Naruto seriously because it's straight up plagiarizing the 1999 Hunter x Hunter anime. Not just general concepts, but tons of visual motifs that only showed up together in that show.

Hunter x Hunter went dark in a very gritty way without taking it too far. When you look at Naruto as a derivative of that, it doesn't seem dark anymore, it just seems edgy.

It's just aesthetically cool. People will spin all kinds of cope for how it's innovative or deep or whatever but at the end of the day it's just cool. It's the same reason guys like shonen anime. It's cool. That's all it needs to be.

Obviously, the colors aren't super vivid or whatever. You don't get high again. But textures will start to crawl around and distort if you just stare at them a certain way.

I can manually trigger the illusion just by focusing on a texture a certain way. You probably can even if you've never done LSD, you just wouldn't have any frame of reference and probably wouldn't notice it.

Bandai has the rights through Shueisha, it's not a normal production. There are only a couple of key animators working on it, normally.

Basically, the guy in charge of running the franchise left last year, and started his own company using a trademarked name, which means he has some kind of rights. But the original company also has all the distribution rights, so he can't do anything yet.

Either he left because nothing was getting done, or nothing was getting done because he planned on leaving. Either way, it's strange for something like this to be made public.

It could be a good thing. If negotiations go well, production could finally start back up. It could also just cause trademark Hell where nothing can ever be produced. Or the original company could wind up with all the rights, and production could continue under new creative direction.

If you've been following it since 2018, it's interesting because we finally have a hint of an answer as to why production just stopped, and has never gotten off the ground again.
