I don’t exist

If someone has bitcoin derangement syndrome I typically encourage them. This is the best strategy to remove energy from such people and ensure their influence is minimized. I ❤️ wealth inequality.

Gridless has established the first of its kind: a biomass waste powered Bitcoin mining operation in Kenya

Partnering w/ one of the largest sisal producers, @GridlessCompute was instrumental in helping commission a 1.7MW waste biomass power plant at the sisal plantation

Sisal is a natural fiber derived from the sword-shaped leaves of the Agave sisala plant. Sisal is strong & durable natural fiber used to make rugs, mats, ropes, twine, & brushes, as well as in agricultural & industrial products like sacks & reinforcement materials

The leaves are harvested, crushed & scraped to separate fibers from pulp. The fibers are washed, sun-dried, brushed, & graded before being bundled. The sisal plants die after ~10yrs, leaving behind a large bulb. In the past, these redidues were collected & burned in the field

The plantation sought to commission a 1.7MW plant that would use the biomass. But due to covid related delays & the gov canceling a PPA that would permit excess power to feed into the grid, commissioning the plant became uneconomical as it would run at low power & inefficiently. Given that commissioning costs were the same, regardless of generation power, the power plant stood idle & the sisal bulbs were burned in fields, their biofuel potential wasted

Gridless identified the stranded power opportunity & partnered w the sisal production facility, consuming the unused power to run up to 1.1MW of Bitcoin miners. By providing an end use for excess power, Gridless Compute made it economically feasible to commission the powerplant

https://photos.app.goo.gl/Cx7k9wZPrFYK1rGJ7

The power plant is fueled by dry sisal bulbs that would be wasted by field burning. The sisal bulbs are dried, transported to the site, & crushed. Biomass is fed to a vertical suspension boiler via a conveyor system & the boiler produces steam to run a turbine & generate power

Before the power generation facility was commissioned, the plantation faced several challenges. The sisal fiber production facility uses 500kW, but their demand has large peaks, fluctuating between 200 and 800kW. The electricity supplied by the national grid is intermittent, with up to 4 power cuts a day. During outages, expensive diesel generators are needed to supply electricity to the factory & time is lost restarting machines after a power outage

Bitcoin miners are power problem solvers. They're the perfect demand response tool & can locate directly at stranded power, incl waste biofuel. Miners also provide a demand response service as the sisal production facility ramps up/ down to balance the load on the power plant

The beauty of this project is that Gridless Compute supported renewable generation in Kenya, & the 1st of its kind at that. Another incredible case study of Bitcoin miners presenting a novel way to identify stranded power & support electricity infrastructure in a far corner of the world

Lastly this project is close to my heart: my Masters thesis focused on biomass supply availability (for biofuels) & I helped shape biofuel policy in Canada before I joined this industry. So I jumped at the chance to come full circle & visit this biofuel Bitcoin mining site

A big thank you to the Gridless Compute team for being incredible hosts & taking us on a tour of the mining site & power plant & facilitating a tour of the sisal production facility. So Gridless pays the sisal plantation owners for the power from the proceeds from mining? The plantation keeps their power stable and makes a little money and Gridless gets some bitcoin?

I was in Thailand and they were burning crops in fields making the air unbearable. Something like this may work there.

The ghost of MSTR’s future

Bitcoin wokeism of the day:

Bitcoin reduces wealth inequality.

False.

Bitcoin gives everyone the opportunity to become wealthy but not everyone will seize upon it.

Most will be too weak and consumed with the noise to buy bitcoin before it’s “ok” to.

Those who do seize the opportunity are unique, free thinking, self-directed individuals who deserve more influence.

Wealth inequality is a real world metric that measures how many such people exist in our world.

You may change the unit of measurement (bitcoin, fiat, etc.) but what’s being measured doesn’t change.

I’m curious how you think about holding and researching assets other than bitcoin. I used to hold quite a few equities as well as ETFs for exposure to commodities and foreign markets. But I got tired of spending hours digging in only to compare it to bitcoin and be woefully underwhelmed. So now I have bitcoin, USD, and a couple of equities that have outperformed bitcoin over the past few years (but aren’t likely to continue to).

Is it for hedging purposes against bitcoin bear markets and tail risks?

"It’s a healthy practice to approach our work with as few accepted rules, starting points, and limitations as possible. Often the standards in our chosen medium are so ubiquitous, we take them for granted. They are invisible and unquestioned. This makes it nearly impossible to think outside the standard paradigm." - Rick Rubin

Being detached from “things” has given me a tremendous amount of free time. Being detached from the expectations of others has helped me figure out how to fill that free time. I started my career at 19 and didn’t let up until my late 40s. I saw enough of the world to know I want to explore a lot more. Nothing opened my mind as much as travel and meeting people so hoping to continue that as long as I’m able. Not to say we wouldn’t have a base again at some point but right now it’s nice being unencumbered. I have no idea where that base would even be and that’s a freeing feeling.

I live this now. Honestly, it’s taking some getting used to. I have a truck and a couple of guitars and my clothes. I travel the US with my wife and dog and anything that doesn’t fit in our Tacoma we get rid of. We’re just exploring right now and will eventually branch out globally.

Our hope is to find opportunities to make the biggest impact we can. My problem is “help” is a complex thing with a cascade of second and third order effects. Most of the bad in the world is done by people who are convinced they are doing good.

It’s also the Buffett conundrum in that any bitcoin I spend now will be worth much more in the future. So part of me feels like the best thing I can do for now is just protect my holdings for the next decade and stay focused.

People have noticed I’m retired in my 40s and living a very unique life so I have to say no to a lot of things. Which I’ve learned is a super power.

Not enough ego food over here on Nostr.

Not true. Primates regularly war with one another over territory and resources and often kill members of other tribes purely for sport. This has been observed and documented by countless anthropologists.
