I would start seeds in Jan or Feb to give me a chance to sex them. If they're not 2', or taller, they're not going to produce much. If they're showing signs that they've already flipped, either accept a tiny harvest, or send them to compost.
In my area, Trader Joe's is hit or miss. If you want sugary sweets, they do have some tempting items. Sometimes an item will be a good deal here, but it mostly caters to the upper class (as a discount store to them), and many of the prices reflect the demographic they are aiming for.

This reminded me that I was on a team that won a state drill competition. We had chrome (looking) helmets, no bayonette or firearm (as we were mostly minors), but our fake rifles looked snazzy, and none of the other teams had the moves we did. Fun stuff!
