I feel you. Unfortunately, I think there is lots of hypocrisy. A lot of the “no algos ever” people actually love(d) Primal and their Trending feed.

The truth is everyone wants a perfect world. No censorship but no annoying spam (or people saying mean things to me), decentralization but fast performance, no follower counts but also follower counts.

I think it’s a lot more nuanced than the average user is willing to admit.

Sorry but I’m not buying the Primal outrage. Either you are ok with their trending feed (an algorithm you DON’T control by definition that is going to include whatever filtering they see fit) or you aren’t ok with it and choose not to use it.

If you want to use nostr without algos like you claim you do, you are absolutely unaffected by any of this.

Stand up your own service that doesn’t do any filtering and let’s compete for users.

Filtering spam is a useful service. Many Nostr threads are already overrun by shitcoin airdrop scams for example. IMO, this problem gets worse as Nostr grows and simple mute lists are not enough because spammers can easily create new accounts for each new spam message. Primal's current capabilities in dealing with this are far from perfect. We may miss some spam, we may get false positives. Some users might disagree with us on the definition of spam. That's why we are building the tools to give more control and the final word to the user.

I am serious when I say that competent content filtering will be a key feature that Nostr clients will compete in. There will be clients that don't do any filtering whatsoever (or make filtering an opt in instead of opt out), and that will attract users who want that. We don't claim to have the final answer to any of this. We are simply working on providing the best service we can and doing so in a transparent manner (our entire stack is FOSS). We really hope that others will stand up services with different rules so that we can all learn from each other and adjust.

Primal is literally shadowbanning my friends with absolutely no transparency and without providing an opt-out option.

It's not just about whether they fix this or not, but also about how little they understand this community.

They haven't even communicated this with the community; they simply set some arbitrary criteria and started shadowbanning people based on those criteria.
