I’m excited. They said we can clean out and take the whole bin. Probably 10 feet long by 4 feet wide and 2 feet deep. It will be worth the work to haul it all. Plus they are thinking about getting out of easing rabbits, so we may be able to buy their cages later.

Man oh man that was a lot of shoveling. We managed to get all 10 wicking beds ready and filled with soil today. I did a layering method with different soil ingredients. One or two 5 gallon buckets at a time, then used my hands to kind of claw-twist the layers together. Yes, that’s a technical term.

We used a combo of repurposed sifted soil from our previous raised beds, soil from some in-ground beds, one small layer of top soil mixed with a bit of our clay soil, rabbit poop, worm castings, semi-shredded leaves from fall, perlite, one bag of Black Kow per bed, a little DE because there were a few fire ants in the mix, repeat repeat repeat. We left about 3-4 inches at the top for mulch. We mulched with leaves.

We’re still filling them with water now. About half pressure from the hose and it takes 40 minutes per bed to fill.

Next step is to make them pretty. I think we are also going to add a layer of insulation before we clad them with metal.

Hubs is down an arm so he plumbed the overflows while I shoveled. We didn’t end up getting the recommended bulkhead fittings because of cost, but manages to cobble together some less expensive PVC pieces. Hope we don’t regret that, but we left a way to access them.

Holy jackpot Batman! Our friends’ rabbit shelter/worm bin, and they said we can have as much as we want. Amazing!

I’d really rather have an old wired model. Up or down is fine with me. I don’t need to know the number.

Thanks. Our upright is pretty full and accessed to often. Definitely need a chest freezer.

We got a display model Sleep Number mattress from a guy that sells them out here. Only problem is no remote. Do you ever come across remotes or complete pump sets for these? I need to either buy a remote or an older version with the corded controls. I can crawl under there and get the model if you think you might find one.

10 wicking beds to fill and trying to make do with what we can glean from our existing garden. I have 2 big bags of perlite and a friend we can go get a free load of rabbit droppings from. We also have compost from our bins and a good pile of leaves from the fall.

We plan to put a pond in the middle of the garden @Jackspirko Miyagi-style; so we can dig out some top soil from that area as well.

We’ve had wood chip paths in place for a couple of years. The soil under there is awesome. I fashioned a screen out of hardware cloth and a scrap piece of IBC tote frame. Going to sift out some good soil for the beds… then it started raining so coffee break!

Ideas for storing and using lemon balm? I have a bad habit of planting things and thinking I will remember what they are next year. I thought all of this around our fountain was different mints, but the largest one here in the back appears to be lemon balm. I didn’t harvest and use these last year. I want to do better this year. There is also spearmint, chocolate mint, and I one other flavored mint I can’t remember. 🤷‍♀️

So here’s my beef 😂 with Butcher Box. You click all the different choices and can’t really tell how much you are paying for each item. I kind of want to know what I am paying per pound for each type of meat, to compare to local prices. I can’t figure out if it is a decent deal or not. Obviously it is more expensive than cheap crappy meat, but how much more? Any opinions on whether Butcher Box is worth it?

We had some left over fabric from doing French drains. I tried a couple of different ways: wrapping tubes of sand along the sides and just wrapping the reservouir aka plastic pallet.

Weed block fabric and a 1-2 inch layer of sand went into the 10 wicking beds today. Tomorrow we will pop in the overflows and fill with soil. Hope we can be planting by Sunday. #grownoster #growfood #wickingbeds #gardening #microhomestead
