No, Amethyst doesn't run on background. I have checked the source code, it closes any websocket connection when apps go into background. It is mainly foreground usage.
In my case, i often to browse global feed looking a lot of content (image and video), get around 5 GB daily. A lot of people upload HD images and video. If i'm only looking at Home Feed it becomes lower around 1 GB. Depends on our time usage and habit. π

Yeah, the price is quite costly. Between three of them i think Vultr is the cheaper. I only ever use them for my small private project.
Too many providers, hard to find cheap provider while also mantain the quality. Some providers even oversell their VPS. You will have bad neighbour who will slow down server performance.
