Violinist and teacher, building a homestead on raw land in between lessons and concerts. Fascinated by how we can develop resilience in our lives, in our families, in our communities. I'm excited about freedom tech and circular economies, and am deeply grateful for the devs and advocates who are helping build tools for a better future.

Temperate. Hot humid summers, relatively mild winters (below freezing for most winter nights but mild days).

The straw/mudslip goes much faster than cob but it still takes a while to fill those walls! Was fun and satisfying, though, and the house feels amazing and insulates very well.

I promised this ages ago! Some photos of our straw/mud house build.

Concrete pad, brick stem wall, planning out windows (from a Craigslist ad, old nearby barn)

partway through straw/mudslip fill

sand/lime plaster

finished tiling today

At least 60% of our calories come from the half cows that we buy from a local regenerative ranch.

I have no words of wisdom, but I'm sure I speak for many when I say that ranchers should be revered, not harassed. Tell them thank you!

How decentralized is Bluesky really? nostr:npub1s7kf9vtmyl2vwzwmhrkfvc66t28xlvh5c9dxgdcn2celskacu2gs0qeul5 has a great essay digging in to it and looking at the design decisions that make Bluesky work but also really hard to decentralize.

Nostr is mentioned several times, we take the mantle of an actual decentralized network by making it work really well. Interestingly Primal is the best Nostr client ecosystem and they’ve also had to introduce centralization to make the experience work well.

If you care about social media protocols and want to get in to some of the details about how then work, then read this essay. We can’t build Nostr effectively if we don’t understand what others are doing.

Thanks for sharing, Rabble!

Umm - wow. No, I just believe in free expression, even for folks that I don't agree with. Even for folks who respond to strangers on the internet with categorical statements and crazy accusations.

I know some people who think they should be able to force others to use pronouns, and they are probably also the ones who would turn us in for not wearing masks, etc. I agree with you that the Venn diagram for those (who insist everyone use pronouns) and all the things you listed is probably an almost complete overlap. I'm in an organizational fight with one of those people right now. Giving in on this question feels almost existential to me - if I use pronouns to make other people safer, I'm part of a very serious problem. So I'm willing to fight on my right to *not* use them. But it's none of my business if they chose to use them.

(And I also know some who use pronouns because they have been convinced that by doing so they're helping trans people. They either haven't thought much about it or are afraid of backlash within their social group. Off the top of my head I can think of at least half a dozen ppl I know in this category.)

Yep

And just to be clear: now I totally get why someone who voted for Obama (and for Bernie in the primaries) would vote for Trump now. It was my ignorance that made that confusing for me.

Boomers were evenly split between Harris and Trump. Gen X favored Trump.

Ha! ah, got it.

But lots of punk fans (and bands, I think) went full psycho during covid, didn't they?
