having the option of enslaving yourself to your choice of habit
vs
being compelled to enslave yourself for the enrichment of the powerful
Yeah - like they weren't even trying to hide it (or didn't even realize there was anything to hide).
oh! she doesn't need a full Senate confirmation? I thought the committee was just to get her to the next stage.
In any case, glad to hear this. I actually don't know much about her, but listening to the bs from the committee members questioning her was maddening.
It basically amounted to "Questioning the surveillance state is immoral, only traitors talk to enemy leaders, and Snowden committed treason! Say it! SAY IT!!!"
If someone has to use Google for work, does it help to keep all Google-related activity in one browser?
Yes. Unreal.
Once you see policy in terms of incentives, it's easy to understand how we go here but it's still so sad.
Why Bitcoin? Why self-custody?
“The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) argued that confiscating $50,000 from a small business did not infringe the business' right to private property because money is not property.”

Unbelievable.
Also, I would think that those three arguments for why money isn't property could be useful in cases about the legality/constitutionality of requiring people to use the dollar as legal tender.
'The DOJ gave three rationales for the argument, all packed into a doorstopper of a footnote: (1) the government creates money, so you can't own it; (2) the government can tax your money, so you don't own it; and (3) the Constitution allows the government to spend money for the "general welfare." '
This makes no sense even within her own framing.
The reason I - as a lesbian - am married to a man is that the man used to be a woman. So basically since that person doesn't fully count as a man, I'm still a lesbian.
Do I have that right? And wouldn't that be considered transphobic?
Yeah - that's a whole lot of sugar in one meal.
But look at the bright side: the contractors who package that food and have deals with hospitals make huge profits! Plus you get employment for the hospital admins and lobbyists who make that happen.
When I don't get too wrapped up in the whether it's literally true, I feel so much more free to learn from Christianity and from my Christian friends.
It seems to me that our modern time is weird this way. I assume that for most of human history, we had the stories that our tribal culture gave for the universe and we aligned our actions and beliefs with those stories. I doubt that there was any question of choosing a religion or figuring out whether we believed in it or not, but rather that spirituality was embedded in the way we lived in the world.
meat, eggs, cheese, butter, tea, water
may try a month without the cheese and see if I notice a difference. Feel pretty amazing now.

Vaccines are "unavoidably unsafe" - what the pharma companies told Reagan and congress while explaining why they needed liability protection
Yeah. I made it halfway through Warren screeching about how he might put profit over children's lives, as if she's suddenly discovered the concept of conflict of interest. I couldn't take it.
After reading all that, I'd be fine if my man were to suggest a donkey
