Loving Nostr... I run a UK relay (the first UK Paid Relay) at https://nostr.naut.social Price 4000sats. Which Paid Relays to join? Ones near you, (for speed), some around the world, (for reach). Ones focussed on specific interests/groups you like, (not sure if any exist yet, but they will)

To all those who might think Paid Relays are a gold mine, total revenue to date 80,000 sats - 20 people on Nostr.naut.social - which is fine, to learn how these things work you need real data, but not too much of it :-)

I know, but, sent is sent. It can't be unsent because typo but not unsent because other.

IN PRACTICE there a DELETE request is built into the protocol. Not sure if any apps have implemented yet, but it's a REQUEST, so not enforceable.

My take, most relays will act on the request - it frees up space. Some might only act on ones sent within the hour, which would stop people rewriting history the way they they do on twitter, while allowing accidents to be fixed.

It's all very much a work in progress, but because it's a protocol, interesting things will be done :-)

You can't delete emails either once sent. Nostr and Twitter are different, use what you like. I'm on both.

I just very excited then. Because I live in Β£, oh well, I can wait :-)

No. Relay by relay. Different relays will have different rules. Report to Disney that which breaches their rules, and to MakeLoveNotGuns the maga gun rights stuff that breeches theirs.

Sry, I have no, is it Chinese?

Any Clients support Account switching yet? Work account npub, social npub...

Well I deliberately picked travel when I was younger, as once the career started I knew I have no time for long trips until I retired

Aliens. No can do. If we make her an Alien everyone whinges that it's a sort of Under The Skin. (If you haven't seen it, do so. Very different). Scarlet Johansson for the lead though, I like it :-)

You seem to have a thing for water fixtures. Are you an actual plumber that would bring verisimilitude to the scene?

Her Uber driver side kick? She obviously doesn't drive....side kick allows for banter and exposition...

Email has scaled to everyone online. Decen scales very well IF users accept that connections won't be forcefed to them.

Twitter is a big box that contains everyone. Nostr is more like a map of the country where each city does its thing but is connected to others.

It's glorious.

But, some people like horror movies and mate, they really don't work for me all.

Next up - you use Nostr.band to find some cool people to follow. But how do you tell if you have relays in common?

Ideas :-

a) People can put their preferred relays in their profile.

b) Clients flag up "no notes from this user for 7 days. If you recently followed this user, perhaps you don't have any relays in common.

It's def worth someone trying with a captcha

Thank you, I thought that was the case.

Def going to advise people that this is not a secure system for DMs - even if the content is hidden simply knowing who communicated with whom is a leak in some cases, and while email also does this, it's not as public :-)

I like this idea, BUT robogenerating npubs is trivial. The current spammers are already doing this.

Sort of silly question, but, how do DMs work?

Notes - get sent to all the relays you write to, and picked up by followers.

DMs - are they also sent to all the relays you write to, and hence loads of copies lying around, or just to the ones you have in common, or somehow direct?

Layer 2 Service - a DB of Relays and an API that the client uses. User answers a few questions and it suggests a block of relays to follow "you are in the UK, speaking english, and are interested in a Family Friendly relay. Try these....names, descriptions and costs."

Relay owners fill in the counterpart.

Been out. Got it, but now snodrt not showing zaps at all. Ah well :-)

Fun fact : No one has any idea how fucking noisy swans are until one lands next to your boat just as you're drifting off to sleep....

I'm not technical - you might have noticed - but to me, spammers, as we see, post in crazy high volumes. People, even addicted people, could run to 500sats per post and not blink, but spammers, would.

"Dreams a bit".....first x posts 500sats per. Next x, 5000sats. Next x, 50000, adjust to whatever level stops spammers on the relay.

Thinks - if relays noticed the same content, or substantially the same, being reposted, throw up an invoice or human test.

No doubt our devs have many long days ahread of them :-)

Are Paid Relays a Shitcoin?

Last night on Nostr Spaces, we discussed potential implications of paid relays. I believe we Nostriches all understand that paid relays are needed for 1) to pay for the service that we're using as nothing should be free 2) relay operators need funds to pay for relay hardware infrastructure and 3) to thwart spammers.

#[0] said that he thought that paid relays were Shitcoins. What did he mean?

With a Shitcoin, anyone can create one. There is no Proof-of-Work in this process. The creator makes promises about their current offerings or future offerings. And lastly, they want payment and take user's money.

#[1] mentioned that he believed paid relays should operator on a Web-of-Trust model. What does this mean?

Do you know the relay operator? Do they have an older or well known Nostr public key? Did they previously run a free relay? Do reputable people use and recommend this relay? It's fairly easy now to form a Web-of-Trust with well known actors in this space and community.

As we move forward, we do need to watch for scams. A relay and operator could appear out of nowhere. A relay could promise the moon on speed and resources. That relay and relay operator could also disappear in a day or a week or a month, after they've reached their fund raising goal.

Right now, using Nostream to operate a paid relay at least requires a ZBD developer account. This is right now behind a gatekeeper. #[2] needs to approve relay API access. This will get easier in the future. In the future, Nostream will work with other providers and I would assume even end up working with your own node. In the future, we'll need to be more diligent when choosing paid relays.

Start building your Web-of-Trust now.

Relay operators WILL appear out of nowhere. People will probably say I did :-) I'd say I've been around since I write the first uk.finance FAQ on Usenet :-)

There will be scams, because a PAY ONCE model is not sustainable, but while it's essentially the only game in town, and people have no idea what fair charges are, I predict the following :-

Mainstream Media notices Nostr. Scammer buys ads next to those articles, uses all the usual tricks re click-ad, pitches a top end price via a fiat front end. "Just 10 bucks, GOLD LEVEL MEMBER, Free Client Software". Pulls in money, vanishes. As with all scammers, they prey on the new. People who don't know how things work.

The best way to mitigate this is to move to a per month or even per post (if spammers start to pay to relay) model for pay models. Roll out others as you like too. But an ecology of "once only" is where scammers will come and they might thrive.

The next thing that will make it harder for scammers is relay differentiation. I run a relay. I'd like to say "I run a relay out of the UK, following UK law, so great for Brits and other english speakers". Right now, I can't. (But I did see the post that suggests soon, I'll be able to).

Iceland. If not overly planned, whale watching in the North if you can.

Brilliant. One day I write https://naut.social/nostr-tags/ and the next, it's being implemented (OK, so it was in there already, but, brilliant). A language control immediately makes running relays scale up at same cost, and running minority language relays possible at all. YES, YES, YES :-)
