I do want to say one thing about mac apps, particularly proper Mac OS X era first-party apps (before the crap iOSification of everything).

Mac apps were both very powerful, AND easy-to-use. Not OR.

In Linux-land, it's mainly OR. #Gnome thinks that having more than four options (or a proper menubar for goodness sakes) is anathema, and KDE (which I do love) is just married to complexity.

...

I have to admit to leaning toward the GNOME side. A few well-considered options make things easier for both users and devs (since test cases need to be made for every combination of options, in an ideal case). It can be done poorly, but it can also be done really, really well.

nostr:npub1l3gpk6vrudg8r67swqlex5alv9ch59s4lw46kk6hekuxe2n3aczsyqvu48 With very large limits, there is a danger of a DoS attack of using an extremely large password repeatedly to force computationally expensive hashing on the server side. But 50 chars is in no danger of that, to my understanding.

Something I just learned how to do in #qutebrowser: have JS disabled globally but enabled for specific sites.

- `:set content.javascript.enabled false` to disable JS globally

- The keybinding tSh toggles whether JS is enabled for the current host; tSH includes all subdomains; tSu only for the current URL

So handy!

I wonder how often websites use the "do not track" flag as a signal that they need to bring the big guns of tracking out to circumvent possible tracker blockers. :)

Well, some things have been much slower on it because of that, but yeah, I'm not too worried. Storage is cheap right now, though, so I might as well.

I think I remember you having complaints about the PineTime's battery life? I just saw that the recent release has a significant battery life optimization: "we were able to reduce the idle power consumption down to around 200µA, where it would use ~900µA previously! The PineTime can now easily run more than 10 days, while it would need to be recharged after 3-5 days previously!"

Might be worth taking a look. I plan to once I get back to the US.

Looks like it has qutebrowser-style navigation, which is awesome! Okay, this is a serious contender with a terminal client, then.

Yeah, it's a bit ambiguous. This specific case I'd see as allowed since the CoC acknowledges that advocacy "is important" and specifically says under "Non-Goals" that "If you would like to exercise your full free speech rights, you can do so somewhere else".

I'd say that parts under "Non-Goals" wouldn't be violations on other servers since they're clarifying things that *should* be done on other servers instead of Fosstodon.

nostr:npub1ykvylvnd2v7lk0eknvf3cypdkcy9j5u5x6avcpuklvgducqcmsqqfmey6z My alt account does potentially-argumentative opinionated stuff, which:

> Fosstodon is not: ... An advocacy space. There are many important, controversial and political issues; and advocating for what you believe is important. However, Fosstodon is not the place for that advocacy. Even correct views can violate our CoC.

Yeah, I don't think that would fall under this clause, based on my reading of its intention. Perhaps nostr:npub1tc6fesueqqdq0drl9rards3ukuswyd670x74pp8ggge24ect3x6qrcmhfm and nostr:npub1cggwd2qltel960zmd6emshclhdfk2na2k2dcmlwkfhgflfn6at4qy30n34 could chime in and confirm that, though.
