Northern hemisphere folk, winter is coming and we should all be prepared.

Physical Health:

This time of year many people become less active. Proper nutrition and vitamins and minerals can be very beneficial.

To keep from becoming sick it's always wise to clean your hands before and after you eat. Many germs and viruses can enter the mouth and nose area.

With the days cold and dry it's also wise to take special note to the dryness of your sinuses. I believe that many winter illnesses may be attributed to dry/cracked sinuses. Proper hydration is very important. To keep your sinuses from drying out in the night, lightly cover your sinuses to increase heat and humidity to balance out sinus hydration.

Nutrition is essential for proper body processes. One mineral that is often overlooked in the winter is salt. Even though you are not sweating much of your dehydration is from breathing. Salts will help your body to retain that hydration. Vitamins are important and also aid in body processes and mental health. Vitamin C and zinc to boost your immune system, vitamin B (I think they are antioxidants), vitamin E and D (I think they are fat based?). E will often work like blood thinner (K is to thicken) and D can be for mental health.

Mental Health:

I believe Vitamin D can be very important for winter time mental health because just like sunlight it keeps you from getting that cabin fever winter blues shit.

Try and keep your mind active by reading and doing puzzles or games.

Supplies:

Make sure you have a redundant heat and cooking sources.

Bonus Safety Tips:

Slow the fuck down when driving in shitty road conditions. If your dumbass is late, just face it, you done fucked up. Remember late ='s late regardless. Don't go so slow that you kill someone because you're too afraid to drive. You should have either stayed at home or not boughten the piece of shit you can even fucking drive.

And get your flu shot. Outside of diet and exercise, which cannot be emphasized enough, it is the #1 thing you can do to prevent your risk of a heart attack. People who get the flu, are 6x more likely to experience a heart attack in the same year. Underlying infections and illnesses often trigger heart attacks due to the additional stress they place on the body. https://www.medstarhealth.org/blog/flu-shot-heart-attack

COVID shots protect you in the same way. If you have had the MRNA shots and had terrible side effects, look into Novavax. I was out 24 hrs w fever, two days of feeling yucky, from the MRNA shots, not even a sore arm with novavax. Studies show side effects are lower while maintaining the same effectiveness as the mrna shots. It's a failure of public health communication that most people do not know novavax exists. Rite-aids and Costcos tend to carry it (in the US), you do not need to be a costco member to use their pharmacy.

> TBF in 16 years with millions of computer-hours they've not had an incident. That they know of.

If somebody broke into a BOINC project and distributed malware, it would be known. People watch their BOINC executables very closely, it is a passionate community with many netsec and compsec people in it.

There are two distinct scenarios worth exploring. One is that somebody makes a fake BOINC project, this is only relevant if the user signs up for the fake boinc project, users must pick their own projects with discretion. The other is that an BOINC project may be hacked and forced to deliver malware to devices attached to it. This has never happened in BOINC 20+ year history, likely because all BOINC workunits are signed by projects and projects are instructed to keep signing keys offline. Possible, but exceedingly rare. BOINC also includes some built-in sandboxing but the degree of sandboxing depends on the way it's installed and which OS it's on. Android, of course, comes with some sandboxing of its own as well.

Somebody would have to break into their LAN or Wifi to use any exploit or take control of a BOINC project and attack it that way (or some other background service the devices uses like an update service). At that point, the fact that an attacker was able to do either of those two things is a much bigger deal than the tablet running outdated software. For most users, this is a non-risk. BOINC community is full of users using outdated hardware on their LANs without issue. To each their own though.

Aah good point, I overlooked that. Many routers support an isolated AP or vlans to segregate it from your network if you want. Realistically, if your device is only connecting to BOINC projects and you're not using it for web browsing, the attack surface is pretty low. But to each their own.

Question about BTC lightning. Self-custody wallets all rely on LSPs to make transactions. My understanding is #zeus has a lightning node embedded in it, in theory, I could use a different LSP by opening a lightning channel to another lightning node. Or even if they don't provide the full range of services an LSP does, I can at least have another channel to send funds through. How can I do this? How do I find a node to open a channel with? #asknostr #lightningnetwork #bitcoin

Ask every business you ever interact with if they take Bitcoin. Prioritize businesses that take it. Growth will follow from there.

Welcome to nostr! Use the asknostr tag if you have any questions, people are quite helpful.

If the battery is removable, I would suggest using it for #BOINC (boinc.berkeley.edu). BOINC enables you to offer your spare computational capacity to scientific research, there are projects in all areas of science from open source drug discovery to finding pulsars to math and chemistry. Android tablets are more efficient-per-watt-of-compute than any desktop or laptop will be, even if the total output isn't huge. Not all BOINC project support Android, but you can consult the project list to find those who do. I believe #SiDock, #WorldCommunityGrid, and #Einsteinathome do.

There are some nostr implementations and NIPs for it, but it's far behind the progress #lemmy folks have made.

Looking for suggestions on sources to follow for news about #H5N1. I've been using the related subreddit but would love some others.

Will do. It wasn't working all day and then the second I replied to your comment it worked, maybe I just need to occasionally post or react or something and that forces a refresh for some reason. Definitely switching off nostrudel if this continues. Thanks for the help!

Of course, but it imposes a cost. It is the only system that imposes a cost that isn't tied to identity or centralization in any way. PoW has made L1 almost completely devoid of spam, it works.

I've actually removed every single relay one by one and replaced them and unfortunately this has not fixed the issue. DMs are also missing too 😕
