#momstr #foodstr #creativemedia — in that order. ❤️🍸 #shakennostrd (but actually, stirred is better, sorry James)

Until today when I looked it up, I'd actually never associated "Mardi Gras" with pancake day (Shrove Tuesday), even as a (sort of, erstwhile) French speaker. But of course — Fat Tuesday, duh! To me it had always been about parades of flamboyantly dressed people 😂

A Portuguese pastry appreciation post! This is a travesseiro de Sintra, which Google translate tells me means "pillow" of Sintra. (Sintra is a city about 40 mins outside of Lisbon with lots of historic palaces). This travesseiro is from Casa Piriquita, which I'm told is the inventor of this pastry, which has a rough puff kinda dough (or like a stronger filo, layered) and an eggy almond custard filling that's slightly runny, perhaps because we got them fresh out of the oven. The whole thing is dusted in caster sugar. It's glorious, and dare I say I like it even more than the iconic pastéis de nata/Belém. It's very hard to find outside of Sintra, even within Portugal, which will make it extra delicious in mind, LOL.

Espada, black scabbardfish. Viscious looking thing — can't say I much loved the texture either, but they did their best with it. #foodstr

Dappled sunlight making everything look better (this was pretty good though).

This is self care #shakennostrrd #foodstr

My idea of self-care is to go to an excellent bar alone, where I won't be bothered, and have a dry martini with an olive (with gin — it must be gin, you savages) in relative silence. #foodstr

Yes, precisely — so many "feminists" don't agree with women chosing to stay at home. It's a strange phenomenon, women against women; women judging other women... It happens in so many circles/topics, not just in the SAHM debate.

In and before the mid-20th Century, SAHM was a societal default, so I understand the desire to break away from that, but in this day and age, staying at home very much an option, and in fact, often a privilege — like you say, the economy makes it harder than ever for single income households to exist these days.

The idea of wanting to stay home with a child is not anti-feminist. Feminism is about choice — that women can choose to be anything they want, which includes bring the primary caregiver of their own child. #momstr

Thanks! I quite like Good Inside by Becky Kennedy as well.

One more thought about breastfeeding, one of the best comments I've heard on it is: "it's natural, but it doesn't come naturally" — most new moms I know have had a hard time. Try and find a good lactation consultant or postpartum doula to come check in on you after you come out of the hospital, I'd say 2-3 times for the first week or so would be ideal, and then prob just as needed after!

Congratulations! I'm a new mom too and it's been a RIDE! If you're planning on a natural birth (recommended, as recovery is much faster than c section), I'd recommend reading "Nurture" by Erica Chidi Cohen. But I'd say try and read more books about child development rather than the birth — it seemed scary to me so I spent most of the pregnancy reading about a dozen books on the birth but honestly it's usually over pretty quickly, and then you have a helpless little human on your hands, and it'll make you feel a bit helpless too! I would have liked to be armed with more info beforehand.

If breastfeeding (also recommended - I see ppl have mentioned it above already), watch out for when your milk "comes in" (day 3-5 ish postpartum). It comes in FAST and you'll do well to be prepared in order to avoid a lot of discomfort or even worse, mastitis. For me, warm compresses and two Haakaas to help drain the milk was essential, as well as constant firm (but gentle) massage of the general chest area. Breastmilk is also great applied to baby's skin for just about any skin issue they have, so save every bit you can!

The early days are brutal, as your hormones change dramatically. Give yourself plenty of grace, have a "team" in place to support you emotionally and physically (food, hydration, extra hands for baby and anything else) and remember always to put on your own oxygen mask before helping others, and yes, that includes your child! Good luck, excited for you!

Recently spoke to a white person about regenerative farming, carbon and so on, and they had convinced themselves that local farming is a moot point because transport is a very small part of the carbon equation. While that is true, food is also heritage and culture — I guess one way to think about it is that "terroir" is not just about flavour, but about knowledge and idiosyncrasies that are passed down through the cultural acts around food — farming, eating, cooking...

What this all means is that I dislike char siu made sous vide with iberico pork. 😂

Hate those "Greek style" scams the most

Tried it maybe a decade ago, it's fine??? But it's also about the way it tends to be brewed. Tbh give me gesha any day 🤷‍♀️

No-one told me that being "in my mom era" as a Capricorn meant fighting against the injustices that arise because of maternity leave, or other childbirth-related issues, but here we are.

Tibetan butter tea is salty, and egg coffee is a real thing in Vietnam. So I guess... Welcome to Asia? LOL
