Today the blockchain will fit on 1 TB. If you want your node to remain a full node for years to come, 2 TB is recommended.
You can run a node on a wide variety of hardware and software.
In general:
- 1 CPU Intel/Amd/Arm
- 8 GB memory
- 1 TB storage SSD/NVMe
- internet
- power
There are optional bitcoin specific OSes:
- StartOS by nostr:npub126ntw5mnermmj0znhjhgdk8lh2af72sm8qfzq48umdlnhaj9kuns3le9ll
- UmbrelOS by nostr:npub1aghreq2dpz3h3799hrawev5gf5zc2kt4ch9ykhp9utt0jd3gdu2qtlmhct
Can you see their smiles while setting up one more Bitcoin node in a public school in El Salvador?
Kids deserve fun 😊

Thanks for making and sharing this video. It adds additional motivation for us to continue serving bitcoin by building refurbished nodes.
We also enjoy converting fiat PCs into bitcoin nodes. It’s like they finally have a new purpose in serving bitcoin.
When you do decommission your old node, consider factory resetting it and giving it to another bitcoiner to get them started in self hosting.
Both UmbrelOS and StartOS are good reliable options.
Umbrel has more apps. Start9 is more bitcoin focused (and perhaps more secure).
Whichever you choose, thanks for serving bitcoin via your own node.
We are too busy serving bitcoin by helping others run nodes. These refurbished nodes don’t build themselves you know. :-)
We like to condense the reasons down to two.
Sovereign:
You become more private and self-sovereign when you run and use your own node.
Serving:
By serving bitcoin from your own node you help make it stronger and more decentralized.
Most of the time, no. Most run a node to a) be more self sovereign and b) to serve bitcoin by making it a little more decentralized.
Some node runners optionally install Lightning services. By opening channels with other nodes to route Lightning payments, your node can charge and earn a small amount of fees.
We build bitcoin nodes from refurbished computers. Looking forward to serving the bitcoin community by helping more people serve bitcoin from their own nodes.
