Got a Pi0 right here to try a #Reticulum node on a high place. Power and weatherproofing for 100+F is an issue, but I'm right there with you on the need for this. #Meshtastic is really easy, and should be spreading like wildfire after the ATT outage the other day.
A (too long) update on the old person's #GrapheneOS phone:
Today, they were told their car insurance rates were going up by 30%. Fortunately, they can install a physical tracker, along with a phone app, that will get them a 30% discount off their rate. What a deal! Also, as it turns out, the local agent gets a little incentive for each person they get hooked up with this. Now, this person doesn't assume everyone is absolutely trying to fuck them sideways, so they said.....yes.
And a bunch of people's heads just exploded, as did mine.
BUT...the car insurance scam artists aren't able to install their spy app on the GOS Pixel because, as far as they know, it doesn't have an app store. Not being able to just install whatever crap the insurance prick says is "needed" bought enough time for some conversation, and now they'll be shopping for insurance rates elsewhere. The insurance agent will NOT be taking advantage of the elderly today. Stopping the hard sell was a happy bonus to getting the stock OS off the phone. This is probably a good use case for any OS without a familiar-looking app store.
As for the daily phone usage, it's going well. There are a few frustrations with gestures, but it's mostly unlearning iOS stuff, and it's getting better. The biggest complaint I'm getting is the lack of some specific novelty ringtone. I have to track this down ASAP before the world as we know it literally ends and we all die in the fires. I was able to download photos from iCloud (less than 100 on there!!?!?) and transferred the notes from iCloud into Standard Notes. None of this was encrypted.
Pay attention to this:
Some of the notes had a title of "private do not open" or similar and were actually logins/passwords to financial accounts and addresses/alarm codes to friends and family members' homes. Because "contacts" is where we put phone numbers, not addresses.
Please understand that this is not a stupid person. Their understanding of the tech led them to believe that this was secure. It's not just the Council of the Ancients that get screwed by this stuff, either. The failing-at-life insurance salescritter would have been able to READ YOUR ADDRESS AND ALARM CODE because this sweet old person knows you.
Take care of the old folks. You'll get ulcers, and occasionally want to hasten their journey to Valhalla, but it's for the best.
Gonna be a lot of folks in jail after they call all those politicians retards.
Dang nostr:npub1hgvtv4zn2l8l3ef34n87r4sf5s00xq3lhgr3mvwt7kn8gjxpjprqc89jnv sent the meatballs with the kid. But I made do with coffee.
can somebody explain why a lot of the muricans walk around in their home with shoes on
i am confusion
It's so we don't burn the bottoms of our feet on all the hot brass.
I don't know if I want more coffee or meatballs now.
All is not lost! Add the essence of popcorn, bagel, and meatball to your drink while you get it piping hot again!
I might warm me up a mug of meatball coffee here in a bit.
Wanna know what really brings out the origin characteristics in good coffee?
Garlic.
It's coffee with the aroma of popcorn as a treat.
Holy shit what if this was all about jellybeans? I mean, have you ever tried to steal a jellybean from someone having a heart attack? It's freaking easy as hell. They practically just give it to you.
Forget the display, that thing doesn't have a real keyboard. It's basically two tablets.
Chat AI will push someone to suicide if it hasn't already.
Well in that case, I hope your love child becomes a rock star and buys you a nice house in the country. 😂
I agree, a free tier is needed to get started. And you're right about a watermark being intrusive for that service, also. I just worry that so many of the things we enjoy will become unsustainable. People have to get used to the idea of paying if they don't want to eventually become the product.
It's interesting as a user to get perspective on these things. The ongoing human costs aren't as obvious as operating costs like hosting. Someone should do a "day in the life of a FOSS service" documentary...
As I'm sitting here with nostr:npub1hgvtv4zn2l8l3ef34n87r4sf5s00xq3lhgr3mvwt7kn8gjxpjprqc89jnv talking about this, it occurs to me that pay-per-upload would be an interesting approach, also. Big files would be self-regulating. nostr:npub1ua6fxn9ktc4jncanf79jzvklgjftcdrt5etverwzzg0lgpmg3hsq2gh6v6 kind of does this. If you play a long song, it costs more.
How do you pay for all the storage and bandwidth? People should pay for the service and cover your costs. It's just business. Along those lines, what's the incentive for me to renew if I get basically the same thing for free?
I think a basic repository with no folders, etc. might be a good middle ground. Something less complex that will get some sats inflow while reducing the cost of entry for the plebs.
All that said, I have sent image links to 2 non-Nostr people who immediately decided to start using the service. They saw the domain and that was enough to get them interested. However, they are just freeloading and have no care about Nostr whatsoever.
Send a couple million sats to my mint. They go in my lightning wallet. I delete my mint and disappear.
It's like giving a hobo who runs Hobomint some gold for some Hobocash. But don't you worry your pretty little head, your Hobocash is ALWAYS redeemable at Hobomint for gold. 😇
A solid, recognizable mint owner is less risky than Hobomint.
I'm doing Start9 BTC/LN nodes and LNBits with the Cashu extension added. It's easy enough as long as your Cashu wallet can access the mint via Tor.
