Beginning to really like Nostr. In my short time here (still finding my feet) I have found the dialogue with other users to be genuinely interesting and, above all, respectful even when minds don't meet.
Yesterday I was discussing some of the merits of #ordinals - I won't get into that here - with nostr:nprofile1qyx8wumn8ghj7cnjvghxjmcpz4mhxue69uhk2er9dchxummnw3ezumrpdejqqgpzfrlq2x9ypm6jqyatmxrq90ahzyx474zdg06kle2j9e38xkp0mvse0cxd where I am generally supportive but he is vehemently against them.
We were able to talk rationally, debate the pros and cons and then respectfully disagree. What made this interaction special is that despite disagreeing with me, Brian (I hope that is his name) even Zapped me.
That's the very first time I have received a Zap and, honestly, the fact it came as a result of respectful debate has made me very happy indeed.
Probably a good indicator of Brian's character too. Thank you 🤝
Indeed it is public but that means it's my chain as much as it is your chain. Therefore, provided what I do with it is within the accepted rules (which it is), my right to use it how I like is no less valid than yours.
For avoidance of doubt, I want to make clear that I'm not inscribing data habitually like some maniac. In fact I very seldom do it and when I have, it has been tiny because that's part of the challenge.
Again... right or wrong, good or bad it's entirely subjective. We don't see eye to eye on this specific part of Bitcoin but probably agree on others.
Appreciate the debate.
Exactly. Gave him a follow too 🤝
I understand your perspective but for many Bitcoin is the perfect place to create something where it is beyond decay.
Banksy paints wherever tf he likes. Some think he's a genius, others think he's an idiot.
Thanks for the response and your thoughtful take.
Agreed on the point about not hindering the primary objective. That's in nobody's interest. 🤝
You're describing a subset of people. There are many very smart, bitcoin aligned communities that have been born out of ordinals.
Of course, there are a lot of bad actors too but that exists - as you alluded - on all chains.
I guess what I'm saying is that not all communities, individuals or organisations that utilise bitcoin in non-monetary ways are a net negative.
We evidently disagree on some stuff here but we are both here engaging in respectful debate and contributing to the network in our own ways. You're the ecowarrior and I'm the capitalist buying carbon credits - bad analogy perhaps 😆
You don't have to accept an opinion to respect it.
You don't need to be friends with someone to hold a door open for them.
I run two full nodes, multiple minning rigs and have a significant portion of my net worth in bitcoin.
It's a little sad that you'd reduce my value to nothing just because I own ordinals.
Wouldn't a better position be "hey, I don't agree with you on the ordinal stuff but kudos for doing your bit"
Does the fact that some of these projects are actively onboarding people to bitcoin not count for something?
Like I said, many are even running infrastructure to support the network. Surely thats a positive thing?
Fwiw, this is for me just dialogue. I've no intention of this being combative.
Is there a world where you might consider that some ordinals projects are trying to do more good than bad?
BTW, I totally understand the clutter perspective and I enjoy counter debates. We need our perspectives challenged because it's the only way we grow.
For me, Ordinals brings a huge cultural benefit to the Bitcoin ecosystem. If/when that is combined with thoughtful inscription processes that seek to minimise data size, I think they are a net benefit.
I know more ordinals folks running nodes and miners than I do pure coiners.

Part of the problem with crypto twitter (yes... I know it's called X) it is filled with people that don't actually understand the topics they comment on. Worse is they seem to have large audiences who gorge on the tripe

I haven't set my wallet up yet (new on nostr) but thank you anyway.
Thank you also for the thoughtful response. I am currently only running core (not v30) and I would never say never to running knots.
That said, I am (don't hate me) a big fan of the community building power of ordinals. NFTs too but thats not relevant for this conversation.
Tons of the ordi crew I know are running nodes, mining bitcoin or otherwise hosting some kind of infrastructure thanks to ordinals. Many of us actually enjoy the space restraints that exists and that makes creating art or collections that much more of a challenge and therefore rewarding.
