If you create an event that uses a hash-based identifier, the protocol requires you to include the name of the hashing algorithm you used as an event tag. So a client could read the event, download the object from the URI, run the specified hash function (e.g., SHA-256), and compare it to the ID of the Nostr event. It's kind of like a checksum.

My Bitcoin journey would have looked a lot differently if it wasn’t for Nostr. I understood some of the fundamental ideas and bought/sold at times of hype several years ago, but my tie to Bitcoin died down after that. I joined Nostr not because of Bitcoin Twitter and I never actively used Twitter, but because of the appeal of censorship resistance and decentralization. After joining, I’ve been surrounded by amazing people who happen to be Bitcoiners and I’ve learned so much from them. Admittedly I still don’t understand enough. I still don’t know how to read a Mempool.space page, what certain sat/vB numbers really mean, and I haven’t found the time yet to start using a cold wallet, but I’m here to learn. I’m thankful to the community here that I’ve been fortunate enough to connect with, and I’m excited to see what’s next in this journey.

If you use a simple ID, then you can replace the contents at that URI without breaking the association. In that case, the even attests to a URI more so than an object.

If you use a hash of the object as the ID, then you can validate the object, even if it moves, at any number of URIs.

So, the core concept is simple. I put an object on a server somewhere, and I want other people to know that it's legitimate. Using this NIP, I create an event that identifies that object, tells others where to find it, and attests to it with my Nostr identity, all at once.

Beyond just Git, this NIP can form the basis of SharePoint or Google Drive services, software release verification, authentication of images, and many other use cases besides. The only limit is imagination.
