The media calling Oliver Anthony’s song a right wing anthem when 1) it doesn’t mention political parties or specific politicians and 2) has rather broad appeal across anti-establishment types in general is inaccurate but predictable imo.

Now, I think one valid criticism is that if someone were to write a song called “Rich Men North of Richmond”, and it only criticizes one fiscal policy in the song, then food stamps (assistance aimed at the poor) probably isn’t the best one to pick. There is no shortage of fiscal programs that siphon money towards corrupt rich people (eg defense contractor graft), which would be more on-theme to pick.

But imo that doesn’t detract from the song much. And this unfortunately happens a lot. Usually the fiscal programs that benefit the rich tend to be harder to explain and more obfuscated than ones aimed at the poor (eg food stamps buying unhealthy things vs massive Pentagon or Medicare corruption). By design.

They do not give AF about us. They see and treat us like cattle. We are there to be milked for their pockets, the entire extent to which they care is based on how much it effects the yield they get from us. They toss back JUST enough pennies to stop a revolt, otherwise sowing hate and division to keep us angry at each other so they can spend all their time robbing us blind.

Aregentina electing an anarcho capitalist president and embracing bitcoin would be pretty epic. Especially when the world sees how quickly they recover from a multi-decade bout of fiat-induced economic mismanagement.

America is not a static thing across time. It represented different things to different people at different points in time.

Perception shapes reality.

We should frame our history in a way that enables us to effectively move forward rather than shackle us to the past.

Guess it’s all about perspective. Ask the native Americans, enslaved blacks, Iranians who’s democracy was overthrown to install a dictator who bent the knee to American corporations, most Latin American countries over the last 100 years who have had the CIA (aka American corporate interests) decide their president, etc…

Ask them if America stands for freedom. Or ask if America (like most others) is simply another selfish empire that says what it needs to say to justify its often heinous actions.

No need to hero worship, and that includes countries

Two ways of framing America:

1. “America is the land of the free. It is our essence. We have merely lost the way. It’s time we return.”

2. “America is NOT a free country. It never was. Tear it all down.”

Chamath’s recent rant on All-In on relativism and the United States’ dominance comes with a blind spot.

In a multi-polar world smart governments will opt for an apolitical money that can’t be weaponized or debased to store wealth; bitcoin.

The last two years have proven that the US will weaponize the dollar as soon as it deems it necessary. No matter how strong the US is relative to all other countries the ability to cut others off from the dollar will force other countries to seek alternatives.

The BRICS+ currency, if it ever materializes, will fail rather quickly. There may be a somewhat stable honeymoon period that lasts for a short while after it launches but trust will erode between those countries over time. Bitcoin is the only answer. There is no alternative.
