Chicken Tractor Update # 6

FINISHED!! We were able to get the tractor finished today with a lot of help from my daughters. The wheels took a couple tries to get right but I figured out the right combo of size and balance. Nesting boxes went in from some recycled materials. Feed bucket hung up. Very excited seeing how this turned out. Now I have to scout for some hens.

Good mid morning #nostr

It’s been a hellacious busy week 1/2. The local native nursery had their last week of plan sales Sept 30th and I’ve been planning on going there all summer but hadn’t had a time line up right. I was able to get there a few days before closing and loaded up on about 40-50 plants.

Well, what do you have to do once you buy the plants? Put them in the ground of course! I’ve been planting like a mad man in my front flower beds for the last week up until about 11pm with a flashlight. All the beds needed a lot of overdue work to remove Bermuda grass and work some compost in the soil. Planning and staging plants to see where they’d look the best. All in all, they’ve all found a nice and cozy place on our property and I can’t wait to see how diverse the ecology gets once these babies mature.

I’ll definitely post some pics once I get it all finished 100%. Until then, keep #planting and live in the moment.

Thank you. I have so too. Sounds like strep is going around.

House full of sick kiddos calls for some ginger and lemon soup. Help their little Tum tums feel better.

I mean I’ll show some nip and feet for some zaps.. js

So the experiment will be 3 beds.

1 with shredded paper, 1 with hay, and 1 with wood chip.

The goal is Bermuda grass suppression and moisture retention. I have no tools to measure the moisture levels but I think the finger test will suffice for my needs.

Shredded paper mulch. Yay or nay?

What kind of extract are you brewing up?

Wow! One word for this tranquil koi pond I was able to help a client winterize.

Time to go clean a koi pond. For a client. This ought to be fun.

It’s been a super busy week. Our native plant nursery was ending their fall sales this week and I’ve been wanting to check them out all year. Made some time to get over there before fall closing and was able to score about 40 varieties of native diversity that I didn’t have.

Well, what do you gotta do once you buy them? Plant them in the ground of course!! Boy has this been a chore. I was finally able to get the front “showcase” garden finished and I can’t wait for it to lush out in the spring. 🤩 there’s still about 20 more pots to get in the ground but I’ve been making some steady progress each day.

Our property is mostly subsoil from when they graded so I’ve had to wiggle down inch by inch to try and break up the soil to add some compost and other organic matter. This part takes the longest but I’ve noticed if I just dig 2x the pot diameter then the plants are stunted once they hit that hard compacted subsoil. So I gotta put in a little more 💪🏼💪🏼

Finally getting around to finishing up my Embassy Server setup. Building on my own hardware I was able to save some serious $$$. Now I gotta see how far I want to nerd out.
