Do you run your own Nostr relay?

If so, why?

If not, what is the reason or obstacles that stop you?

Yes, bc i was paid to set it up for a small group. Also s9 makes it so easy

👍

I've never played with start9. Is it clearnet or over tor?

Tor, clearnet soon™

Even tor only is useful. I've tested with just a tor relay on my phone and notes still propagate, just slower. As people with tor connections interact they will spread to clearnet relays too.

.. You really wanna know?

yes. because I can.

You are certainly an outlier, to the maximum of running a relay 😂

Under developed UX

No. Been too lazy to explore. Would love to. But need a turnkey config / management solution since I’m too technically dumb. Don’t want legal liability for hosting illegal content either.

Its a desire of mine... Reason for not, time. Hopefully that changes by end of year. Bitcoin Node, first.

It's easy to start with just a desktop option 👍

tempting nudge, that tray setup looks like sovereignty on a budget. my vps hums with pixel dreams first, but a relay could be the next upgrade against the void. bitcoin node solidarity, indeed.

Cheers mate

Nope, same reason it took me years before running a node, don’t fully understand the benefits and also somewhat indifferent

No, it's too expensive (internet is too expensive in Australia, I can barely afford to run a nostr client let alone my own relay)

Do you guys pay per kilobyte?

Bullshit.

An alternative is a VPS hosted in another country, or a hosted solution.

Thankyou, I have been meaning to look into it more

I’m running a couple, citrine on my phone and one from relaytools, running em because why not will find a good use for the relay tools thing one of these days

Yes, I run a small relay just for my friends it feels good to support the network directly.

Ofcourse. It make zero fucking sense to come to Nostr and not fully commit to freedom. I don't understand anyone not running relays and nodes. Just get it done.

It’s on my list. 🤔

No, I would need to register domain and thus tie this npub to easily obtainable PII 😑

Only if you use a domain instead of say, .Onion.

Yeah, but .onion would work only if clients either use an app that natively supports it, or they use a Tor-enabled browser. No sense in limiting an already-too-small audience (for my niche at least). For a kinda backup I just run https://nostrsync.vercel.app/ from time to time. No backup for blossom uploads though.

With amethyst? yeah, that has Tor buil-in. Pretty sure if I use it as my only inbox it won't work well though.

True, but not what I was saying.

Inbox is for other people's notes to you, not notes you are sending out (hence outbox).

Yeah, but what reason you have fo running your own realy then if not having it as primary for your account?

As a backup.

I'm pretty confident I can get my notes out amidst any circumstance.

- I subscribe to a couple good paid relays.

- I run my own relay on a VPS.

- If all those fail, or refuse to host my notes, I have a relay ready to go on my home PC that I can start in an instant.

- If that fails I have a relay setup on my phone, connecting over tor, that I can turn on.

Also I'm worried about hosting my own notes not others. Your inbox and outbox don't have to be the same relays. Outbox holds my notes. Inbox holds notes from other people.

Yeah, storage is my main limitation.

I’ve got a PC but can’t keep it running 24/7, and my Raspberry Pi 5 hasn’t been as smooth for running a relay as I’d hoped.

I’m going to give it another shot though since I’ve got my own NIP-05.

Also trying to set up a Lightning address with BTC Pay Server, but hitting some issues there as well.

That’s been the biggest barrier for me so far, getting everything to play nicely together.

Opsec is not yet clear to me. Would love to run it solely via Tor or even better I2p.

Haven't done my research yet. Maybe you can point me to something.

It was a wild west finding decent instructions how to spin one without getting into a rabbit hole! 🤦 This was last yr. Would love to know more

Not running one yet, but I’m looking into it. I want to archive my notes. I’ve been looking at nostr-relay-tray but I’m not a fan of npm, so there's that.
