I don't know if he will finish the trilogy or not, but this Patrick Rothfuss quote is amazing:

"There are three things all wise men fear: the sea in storm, a night with no moon, and the anger of a gentle man."

I love the framing. Wise men don't fear many things, so what they do fear is high signal. And then that last point- gentle men are known for their diplomacy and agreeableness in all matters; what would make a gentle man angry?

More importantly to make it really hit home, think about your best personal life example of a *specific* gentle man. Your awesome uncle, perhaps. The guy who is literally always chill. The gigachad walking around with his goats and never gets upset.

Or, if you have trouble with a personal example, just picture Mr. Rogers. The quintessential gentle man. Always nice. Neighborly. Who can picture him angry?

And then one day, for the first time you've ever known him, he is fucking furious at something.

That's signal. And truly scary.

What would make a gentle man angry?

Rank injustice and senseless slaughter.

A clear threat to that which he holds dear.

Terrifying. I hope to never lose my cool, but if I do, watch the fuck out.

Receiving 3 instead of 4 chicken nuggets in his 4 piece nugget meal from McDonald’s.

I remember occasionally checking IsBook3OutYet on Twitter every few months after finding the king killer chronicle about 8 years ago, then one day they gave up 🥲

Things that should work but do not. Being honest when you are promised an outcome but are disappointed by the failure of the system. Being good only to accomplish something distasteful. Everyone has a point where they realise they are being lied to.

Have you read his first two books? if so do you recommend?

I liked the first two books and the kind of tangental novellas he wrote.

I just want him to finish the story. If I didn’t like it, I wouldn’t care.

I remember my grandad, the chillest of men, absolutely losing his rag at inflation in the 80s. It was the theft of his stored hard work, he played the game, thought he'd won, then was left with a losing hand.

Can relate.

i too await the third book.

and i consider myself gentle ……

Someone or something systematically wearing down his patience …

Jeff Booth almost went there in a debate with Gammon

C'mon Patrick, finish that third book man. First 2 were great. Been so long I fear he won't be able to live up to the hype from the long wait

Injustice.

Cynical opportunism, exploitation, treachery

I consider myself a gentle man but I felt furious when I see the 10th year anniversary of “Name of the Wind” when there is no third book yet. And I remember clearly he promised “Well... I've already written them. So you won't have to wait forever for them to come out. They'll be released on a regular schedule. One per year.”. This was around 2007…

And he has no ethics issues earning even more money from the books he published by making 10th year anniversary, making kickstarters for games …etc

I remember I got teary eyed when reading “Name of the Wind” because the way he describes things. It was a beautiful experience but he is the author version of BitBoy Crypto in my eyes. A more sophisticated and bearded version but a liar in the end and that’s the sad truth. (I’m also looking at you George R.R. Martin didn’t published a single Song of Ice and Fire book after you made the series deal HBO leave us in the cold after read the series for so many years).

Anyhow if you want a honest and productive fantasy writer I can suggest Brandon Sanderson. “The Way of Kings” is just an epic novel. Also the way he handled “The Wheel of Time” after the sad passing of Robert Jordan made him earn my heart. Otherwise we will be out in the open after reading 11 books with ~900 pages each. He tied up the story brilliantly.

I immediately thought of my maternal Grandfather.

A giant of a man. Gentle, softly spoken & very tolerant.

He probably only raised his voice a couple of times but when he did, you paid attention.

The 1 time I can recall, I think I was being a dick to my sister. The change in him was so swift & dramatic, that it terrified me.

One of my favorite quotes

Being trapped in a zero sum social environment.

being led along for a long time while putting out an extraordinary amount of effort about getting compensation and then having the rug pulled after a month of endurance.

just happened to me recently.

Why wouldn’t he finish the trilogy? I’ve been waiting.

So glad you're reading the Kingkiller Chronicles. Rothfuss is a woefully slow writer, but these books are some of my favs. The Audible versions are well narrated. You might also read the Red Rising series by Brown, which is also underway.

What makes a gentle man angry? We all have our lines in the sand. It may be he can endure so much pressure but no more at a point. Or he may have certain moral issues on which he will not bend.

His writing hits different… especially in these times, when so many good men and women just want to be left alone to raise their families without interference. God help us when the last straw falls, and those gentle, kind souls realize there is no other option than to fight.
