Hey new Nostriches, how's it going? What are your pain points on Nostr? What can we/devs do to make your experience better?

One thing that always, always, always comes to mind is Discoverability.

Discoverability is hard and it's something that developers are actively trying to improve upon. Some clients have implemented feeds powered by algorithms, but it's not widespread.

In the meantime, if you're new to Nostr and you've created an absolute banger of a note that you feel others should see, please take advantage of the Derek Algo. Just mention me in your top tier note, and I'll check it out and share it with the masses if I agree that it definitely needs more eyeballs.

Algos can go to hell. Let people suffer to find each other. They will value their connections more.

Let addictivity to Twitter and normies.

Algorithms don't have to be bad. We'll have an algorithm store soon. The groundwork is already there on several clients and more work is being done in this front. Just look at what my man nostr:npub1l2vyh47mk2p0qlsku7hg0vn29faehy9hy34ygaclpn66ukqp3afqutajft is doing.

Sorry for my ignorance, but how do you make them?

Do you train AI to make follow suggestions?

This place is addictive even without algorithms.

True. Nothing is more addictive than true human connections, right?

Especially the ones I do heroin with, yeah.

Ohhh shit you too??

I get what you're saying, but that aside...

I don't come back because of addiction (like hate does, hate produces a lot of engagement), but out of appreciation.

I see a lot of value in the Nostr community.

More and more value being built every day.

Thank you and everyone who makes this community a reality. A dream come true, an oasis.

Positivity and engagement are addicting too.

Hey Derek! I would love to be able to search for notes by key words. And then filter them by age or the amount of zaps they received.

I use nostr.band to search often, but yes better search tools are always appreciated.

Someone told me they were going to launch a new search engine last week but turns out it never happened πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

It's been on the coming soon plan for about 4 hours. It's on a similar plan as Nests.

-List management has been painful at best

-discoverability and search hasn't improved all that much

-performance and app crashes

I think one year in I want less new features and more polish

liststr.lol is a great tool. And yeah app crashes suck! It's a feature of Amethyst at this point πŸ˜‚

You can now zap in Damus iPhone App with the latest update. I’m pretty sure you could not zap before this update unless you were using Damus TestFlight. If you goto the person you want to zap profile you will see a zap button link to click on.

I thought profile zapping was always a thing, it was just note zapping that Apple didn't like?

You could always zap profiles, it’s just more obvious and quicker now.

Pura Vida Derek πŸ«‚

#Nostr Wins πŸ†

For Damus: please make the feed not scroll back to the top after I open a note. It kills me every time.

Yep, drives me nuts too! After I leave the note to go back to the feed, I find myself having to scroll back down to where I left off.

Yes - this !!!!

You’re the man, Derek. Thanks for all you do!

Good to see you back, Joe. πŸ«±πŸ»β€πŸ«²πŸΌ

It’s been a minute! But love this place. Hope you’re doing well brotha 🀘🏼

Search engine indexing (or the lack of it) also works against discoverability for users but also for nostr itself. Let's take X as an example. If I can't find a tweet but remember the author and some of the content of the tweet, odds are I'll find the tweet immediately through Google. For nostr this obviously doesn't apply and literally kills SEO and discoverability on a different level than just user discoverability.

How can we solve this? I don't know. Just throwing it out there.

I don’t have an android so I haven’t been able to try it out yet but kind of sounds like what nostr:npub1xdtducdnjerex88gkg2qk2atsdlqsyxqaag4h05jmcpyspqt30wscmntxy is working on? An all purpose Nostr browser ?! https://spring.site

A Nostr protocol browser is fantastic. I hope Spring gets more polished and we see more implementations of these in the future.

I don't think a nostr specific browser will solve content, user and nostr's discoverability through traditional crawlers and spiders. Then there is the matter of "duplicate" content which technically is everything on nostr since every client basically shows a duplicate of content received from relays. Nostr content is simply not being indexed by the engines.

Test it with searches like "The Grinder nostr" for example.

Thus content discovery is at this point almost non-existent for the average person searching the internet. Odds of them finding nostr outside of our circles are very low to non-existing at this time.

Thank you!

Identity management. Enterprise key management. Integration with traditional identity systems such as AD and OAuth.

Someone could build an identity bridge for enterprise use.

nsecBunker is a step in the right direction.

Nossky could help.

https://github.com/ocknamo/nosskey

It would be great if to see an improvement with the search feature. Being able to easily search for a username, name, or note content

Also being able to filter out content that uses hashtags for false engagement. (Don’t know if that’s even possible but it would help the experience of newcomers)

Its given me an erection that's lasted more than 4 hours. Should I call my doc?

Depends. Can you put it to good use?

Users sometimes don't show up in the search feature. Sometimes I can't tag people either. They just don't show up.

Search and tagging are bad. Having to go to an external website to look up people is a horrible experience that the average just won't do and will not use Nostr until this is a better overall experience.

I use Amethyst and Primal.

I'd like clients to implement a 'favorites' list to be able to view specific people quickly. I use private bookmarks to do this currently but it's not exactly right.

Another client change, long threads with multiple levels of sub replies get confusing. A little plus/minus toggle to hide replies to 1 level of the conversation would be rad af.

Heres my workaround for that.

On browser, goto beta.listr.lol

You can manage your lists there, so you can make one called Favorites, or Coworkers, or Neighbors, Church, etc.

You'll need the npubs for each user, which may be easiest to search/lookup using nostr.band

once youve populated your list, be sure to save.

Then go back to Amethyst, and your list should be available to filter events on from the top where it says All Follows

I manage all of my lists on listr.lol they then show up on Amethyst. Primal has not implemented this NIP yet.

You shoukd try coracle.social, it has both of these things

Batching of shared notes or option to enable it. πŸ™

For example if Alice shared 10+ notes it would show up as "Alice shared 10+ notes, click to expand" or show thumbnails whatever.

Another example is 10+ users shared the same note from Bob it would show up as "Charles, Derek, Eric and 7 others shared: link"

Maybe some client already does this I don't know. πŸ€”

Oh. That's an interesting UX enhancement that I don't think I've seen anyone implement. I'd be down to see it and use it.

Can you describe what the Derek Algo, does?

This too! πŸ˜‚

Allows your note to get more visibility.

Some of my biggest pain points as a user of 10 months...

0. Not enough devs, or not enough devs working on the same project. Need better collab

1. Only 2 major mobile clients, and both striving to be twitter like

2. Current Polls are zap based, only on Amethyst, and dont support expiration or notification (im working on rectifying part of this but slow going with other projects)

3. List defining and usage is spread across multiple clients. Not one fully supports

4. Communities defining and use is similar, though props to Nostrudel for doing it right. Still, may have been better if community notes werent kind 1, and if the spec didnt mandate moderation (no other notes do)

5. Events just starting to take form with Flockstr, but nothing else using. This is an opportunity for zap.stream, nostr nests and vida.live and others to post scheduled events

6. Ive said enough about Nostr Nests, see my bounties.

7. Onboarding new users needs major work, but i personally feel like this can be aided by more existing users posting more organic content of their own and building up communities that could bw leveraged (along with hashtags) in onboarding

8. Im a bitcoin maxi, but im not pleased with how much prominence zaps gets, and avoid zapathons as they have transitioned to noise with rarely a unique signal. dont see new memes there and thats bottom feeding. On the flip side, I support satogram.xyz for delivering ads with sats.

9. Marketplaces could use some work. Want more like FB marketplace, ebay or craigslist to find some things local.

10. Private labeling doesnt exist. As a user, I want to label a pubkey and have it stick in my client showing as the name regardless of how often that pubkey alters their profile. and i dont want to publish the label to public.

Amazing. I agree 100% with all of these points. As for Nests, I read the bounties. There essentially what I already put up as bounties but more detail and split into several smaller ones all minus a rewrite. I don't think using Jam is the way to go forward. It will never be as good as a full fledged client that's made for Nostr.

The way i see it is these bounties on the existing Jam systems would be a stopgap while another robust solution is built. Its a way to trial some of the ideas as well as it will inevitably take significant time to build a new system.

That's great and I'm in agreement. In fact, this is what I originally wanted to do many months ago. I'm all for getting it built. It's been 8 months without an update to OG Nests and the rewrite stopped 3 months ago. You should have been at Nostrville for my Nests presentation 😭😭

People are taking notice of your post.

Added to the https://nostraco.in/hot feed

Being able to copy 50 relays in CSV format since not all clients support pulling in relays from the network

I'll follow what* he is following β€” in one click

That's a function I'd love to see.

*who

I wrote a few posts on this when I first joined nostr. The idea is for users to curate 'filters' of ways to view/reduce npise in the global feed. These filters could be keyword based, hashtag based, user based etc. But the key is that I can make this filter shareable to other like minded people and its transparent what is going on. No algos.

So maybe if someone is new to nostr they can select a couple of cool filters and then they follow those users

nostr:npub1ff098lem0r2mmwy2td02295pmd0v7dd20tt0c2l35gwcuhyk8yds6thh6h

Main main point: not enough people I follow on Twitter are here.

A client like primal is already better than twitter for my own usage, so I’m not sure it’s a dev problem.

There are still not enough people I care to read stuff from here, so I’d say it’s more of a marketing/awareness/monetization of content issue.

#[2]You can try to use Freerse, Freerse found inside the search for people and topics are more accurate. More suitable for new users joining Nostr to discover people and hashtags they are interested in. foodstr is a hashtag that I must visit every day. There's also a Nostr.Band cleansed global live refresh of posts, where you can see what Nostr users around the world are talking about and find people and communities that interest you.πŸ’œπŸ«‚πŸ€™

The Derek Ross algorithm is like the Being John Malkovich of the Nostr.

I absolutely hated that movie.
