Nostr gives your identity back. It doesn't necessarily give your data back.
For that, you need to operate a relay, even if it is just as a backup for the relays you actually use. Otherwise, things can just disappear.

Or use multiple paid relays?!
It is unlikely that paid relays for real can guarantee that they will not close after some time and the data stored on them will not disappear. I generally have a hard time understanding why paid relays might be needed if everyone (including OGs) complains about spam from time to time and content selection and filtering is available at the client level. There's no killer feature of paid relays imo. And for some reason I think that free relays that copy content from other relays, if they are rotated in a timely manner, can be even more long-term storage for your content than paid relays that risk closing due to low profitability.
help a brother out:
does the relay serve as storage for your signed notes and other stuff + relay others’?
where does my data sit when im not running a relay?
Using Nostr is like getting drunk. I dont always want to remember what happened
或许确实如此,重要的东西不可能只发在这里。nostr就好像在咖啡馆聊天,走出去后并不总是能记住聊了什么
Nostr notes are literally the same as putting up flyers in various spots (telephone pole, storefront window, bulletin board). Each place you put up the flyer has different policies about flyers.
UX should more accurately reflect this
Your identity is your keys, not your event story. Who cares what you wrote months/years earlier than today - maybe only arrogant authors and their haters. Mostly we doesn't have time to read someone's events, and it has 0 value if it's not historical/important for protocol or some sort of superdooper shit. And who cares really what exact relays stores their events - all we need is to be here now and be visible/readable if we want to talk about something.
The data is in the cloud
Is there a good relay build guide for a normal pleb? Like minimum requirements?
Oh, someone should create a dedicated Nostr backup app on iOS (or your platform of choice) that loads your events from your relays and marks it for backup on iCloud (or whatever cloud provider) and allows you to export them.
Citrine does that on Android. But it's is manual for now.
Citrine + Pokey sends all your notifications to the relay as well. This one is automatic right now.
Also … as legacy “black box” apps continue to integrate with Nostr, the business incentives for them to offload their user data “to the user’s relays” will ALSO result in new market for private relays … as users input more identifying and sensitive data that apps don’t want to manage.
Eu quero muito aprender a criar um relé e deixá-lo funcionando...
