What the fully self-custodial zap zealots fail to discuss in their self-gratifying rants is the amount of bitcoin you will need to keep in a hot wallet, always online, in your Lightning node in order to have adequate liquidity to receive zaps, and the added risks of losing those funds due to equipment failure or bad actor channel partners.

Agree. I'm definitely in the privacy extremists camp. But for zap's, people should chill imo. Moreover privacy wise I prefer not to connect my node to my social media activity.

That was one of my reasons for shutting my node down. In addition to just not wanting those funds online, I had shared it so much on Twitter that I decided if I ever run another one I’ll approach my setup differently.

Your original comment summed it up best. My node is just another hot wallet.

Albeit a very functional hot wallet for payments, but yea the risks associated with having those funds always online has to be taken into consideration. If you have 10 million sats locked up in channels simply to receive a few thousand sats in zaps, then that may not be worth the added risk for some people.

precisely. Have a channel with only a few thousand in sats to accept those zaps. my node functions as the middle man. I have a custodial extension wallet (getalby.com) all my zaps go there to an easy to read human readable address. then i send those to my node periodically and perform an onchain transaction to a wallet with private keys stored on a hardware wallet.

Weather my node is on 24/7 or not doesnt really matter anymore.

But it is where i connect all my main wallets to.

Not your node, not your rules.

💯 good approach in my opinion 🤙

I've already lost more than a million sats when trying to learn managing my own channels. The technology will get better but it's not there yet for most normal people

It’s not for the faint at heart. RIP those sats 🪦😅

It's my gift to all of you psychopaths

🫂

I have no time to manage channels.

Steal my 8 bugs in WoS if you dare 🤌

Bitcoin savings always in self custody.

Exactly this 💜🤙

absolutely. only keep small amounts in a hot wallet.

after experimenting and learning with my lightning node, ive closed many of my channels and only keep 2 open for my forecasted needs.

For mobile i use ZEUS which lets you remote control your own node open and close channels and also connect to a custodial wallet like getalby if desired. its by far the best lightning app for android imo

For receiving fractions of cents it’s all overkill.

If your censored or rug pulled on the amazing 1278 sats you received in total — wow that’s worrying!

Privacy-wise you’re probably making all of it public anyway.

I use WoS for this thing and I don’t give a shit what anyone thinks.

Education is a process. In a world saturated with stimuli, first you have to “hook” your audience with something interesting. Then, once you have their attention, build their knowledge in stages, assessing their understanding and willingness to delve further, at each stage.

For sure a process. The custodial vs. non/self-custodial piece of bitcoin education doesn’t have to be 100% one or the other. Until fully self-custodial wallets are as easy and feature-rich as custodial wallets, it is far more productive and beneficial to advocate for safe-enough use of custodial wallets than to rant that people shouldn’t use them at all.

Agree 💯. Facts are important, but how you deliver your “story” matters mire. People have so much passion for their beliefs that they fail to recognize that their audience may not share them. Then, instead of meeting them where they are, they just shout louder.

That’s when the mute button becomes effective 😂

What do you mean? Computers don’t fail 😐

Seriously, the number of people that do not understand that making something available 24x7 is hard. You may be lucky, but it will get you eventually.

💯 Or even if your computer doesn’t fail, but your power/internet goes out or is unreliable. Hopefully you have backup power, and hopefully you can get your node back online before you have to worry about your funds being at risk of loss. The first time I went on vacation out of state and had to worry about whether I had planned adequately for those things it gave me a new perspective on the idea of running your own node. There are many factors to consider before someone can fairly say someone else “should” run their own node.

computers fail, many lost funds on umbrel. just do a brave search or search umbrel groups. lightning is not bitcoin. it is a different system. centralized and not private. not safe for large amounts

That’s not an argument, been running lightning node for 3 years, never lost a single sat. 😁

I wish you many more years of the same luck

also agree. i lost funds on umbrel. no one could help even though i have the transaction receipt and the tx id.

lightning is not bitcoin. it is centralized and has an owner. unlike bitcoin it can be shut down. it is not safe to use. only with micro amounts, it is not even private.

That is not true at all about lightning. It is not centralized and it is 100% bitcoin. Sats in lightning channels just have more risks associated with them than sats in on chain cold storage.

you need to wake up to the reality. it is an additional layer on top of bitcoin, has almost nothing to do with bitcoin, works different than bitcoin. you can build any other layer on top of bitcoin, it would still not be bitcoin.
