We're you aware that every pic you post through nostr.build is going through cloudflare? No? Neither was I. This is exceptionally disturbing.
😡
Stop.
Using.
Cloudflare.

Do you have other viable alternatives?
For what?
To using Cloudflare.
What problem is someone trying to solve by using a really intrusive system that is the antithesis of all freedom tech?
It sounds like they're using Cloudflare for CSAM image scanning. That sounds like a noble cause to me.
No, it doesn't. Not when EVERYTHING is put through a scanning system like that. Especially when it's not known, especially when all that data is NOT being used for "good."
Like I mentioned in another note, I would rather support Cloudflare than CSAM. If you have a better alternative, would seriously be interested. Everything on the internet is being scanned, no getting around that..
I ALWAYS tell everyone here, if you have very personal, private, top secret stuff, or whatever, USE YOUR OWN SERVERS, the beauty of nost!
99% of our uploads are memes, gifs and fun pics.
Btw is there a “delete” button on nostr build and can we have one? I didn’t dox myself yet, but would like option to remove photos if I did accidentally
Could we use IPFS? Maybe that can be an alternative?
Images uploaded everywhere get scanned.
Besides. It's public data in Nostr. It's going to be scanned by various people and entities.
If you don't like Cloudflare then recommend and alternate solution to scanning. If it's cost effective for them to use it, maybe they will look into using it if enough users request the change.
💯
I can't because I don't know enough about that, but it doesn't mean I can't point out that cloudflare is one of the primary forces being used to centralize and kill off the best parts of the internet, the same as Walmart moving in, price cutting, driving out local businesses, then no one has any place else to go then they charge whatever they think the market can bear.
If you can't afford to do CSAM scanning on your own now, you never will be able to do it in the future and that is something that I am not sure anyone is considering when cloudflare and MS inevitably start charging for their services or simply end them like Google often does.
Not looking ahead in this manner is VERY shortsighted, especially since I'm an idiot and I can see that coming. 🙄
I guess it's mainly because thorough CSAM filters aren't well available in the open-source world? Or that I don't know of any. IIRC AWS has proprietary content scanners though I doubt most people rejecting Cloudflare for the reasons in this thread will see AWS as a viable alternative.
Ignoring the problem isn’t going to make it go away.
Not providing an alternative solution isn’t going to solve it..
This world is full of people that complain about everything, but don’t provide a single possible alternative well thought solution..
I am not a web developer. I am not a coder. I have enough trouble trying to get umbrel working which us supposed to be easy.
What I also am is a person that refuses to sit by and just let the entire functional internet get centralized by bad actors who are crowding or competing services by offering them "for free."
This is the whole toxic advertising fueled fiat internet architecture being used to draw the noose tighter on those that don't want to have anything to do with that kind of gross stuff.
I don't have alternatives. I won't. But I'm going to be as vocal as possible about the issues that I see with people who claim to be pro-freedom tech using services that are directly anti-freedom.
After i posted my video with the chicken and the lady and got it removed because of their "TOS" i posted for laughs, my quarrel was why have it within something thats suposed to be decentralized, i get why some were offened but like i asked if its my religious or political beliefs and it doesnt align with the "TOS" what then lol
The biggest problem for us is we are nowhere near a large enterprise or company, so can’t afford in any way to have any kind of legal issue.. It would close nostr.build.
Animal cruelty videos, images for entertainment is illegal in the U.S. I didn’t even know that.. Yours was a really rare case, but it was reported so had to remove it..
What's your plan to be able to afford it or to build your own systems to prevent you from getting rugged or jailed when the systems you rely on more are pulled, priced out of affordability, or simply manipulated nefariously?
Also nostr:npub1sk5x080cwgqz5fcpmyleprvl5swc9352g2398hd4k6wr3qdd8ugqwqsr7m , it was clear you posted the video because it was funny and had no bad intention..
They said in a presentation that nostr.build was centralized
Who said that? I'm curious now.
Its in a nostrica presentation in the costa rica
Hmmm... I'm not sure that's enough for me to find, but thank you.
https://www.youtube.com/live/9GB7nGIhyCA?si=cljkVclt7jMglPaB right in the beginning of this video
Thank you.
Of course we are centralized. There is no such thing as reliable decentralized media yet. StorJ, Filecoin are not really decentrailzed, torrent isn’t reliable..
All that shit is under my name and I can’t risk it or support it. I don’t know about you, but I would rather support Cloudflare than CSAM.. If you know someone that can pay for the o to er $60k a year option, we are all ears.
At the stage we are at, ‘free’ CSAM services like Cloudflare and PhotoDNA is the only option..
Like I said, I get it, but:
A. I'm not required to like it.
B. I'm not required to use your services.
C. I've been using amethyst which defaults to nostr.build for all media uploads without knowing or consenting.
I'm VERY glad to know this now and will modify my behavior in a manner consistent with my convictions, and I will also use what little reach I have to let others know that EVERYTHING they upload is being scanned without consent or knowledge.
Agree with all the above, and for this reason we are completely transparent. We’ve stated these details in our ‘About Us’ page, in multiple presentations, many notes and our GitHub. We are not hiding anything and encourage people to use their own resources and provide feedback.
If you have any feedback, suggestions or resources for any other way to help us block CSAM please let us know!
Curious if you are against PhotoDNA CSAM scanning also since it’s from Microsoft?
I've never been to the website. I am a filthy casual when it comes to nostr. I'm still fuzzy on how it works. I'm learning. But it's not a priority.
I'm not blaming you for my ignorance. I took the statement at the outset of my nostr usage to not worry about it (I asked about data hosting costs pretty much immediately since I know that is expensive), so shame on me. But now I know. And I have decided to change my behavior to match this new information. I legit DGAF about nostr presentations and as a filthy casual I am confused by and am often revolted by how terrible github's interface is. So, I'm not going to be privy to your transparency easily. Now I am. I don't think you're an enemy. I am not taking this personally. I am pointing out that your decision, while practical, is antithetical to what I consider the nostr ethos to be.
I don't know anything that is helpful with CSAM scanning, but I do know that this is a Trojan horse for the entire western world internet and even hardware with Apple and Google providing client side scanning tech developed (but not yet turned on due to legit privacy concerns). Restricting liberty "for the children" is one of the most disgusting abuses of people's general decency to restrict their privacy and liberty. If it comes down t it, I would rather be in an unfettered arena and occasionally have to block/mute things I come across that I find detestable than to have any restrictions placed on my liberty.
You are in a different spot since you are legally culpable, which also pisses me off since I don't think that's correct.
Yes, of course I have issues with anything MS does since they are one of the worst violators of any sort of decency on regards to privacy and liberty.
All of these things are why we can't have nice things if we keep relying on those that want to chop our heads off for wanting freedom and privacy. If you can't afford to pay for services that respect privacy, liberty, and consent, then that means the market is so distorted by fiat BS that you aren't going to be able to dig yourself out of that hole unless you just stop digging yourself deeper into their muck.
Beave, don't you think you're a bit overboard? They're removing metadata when you use their service so in a sense their taking up theresponsibility all they ask for is no porn, animal abuse and anything not to promote violence.
No.
I am not.
They can and should specify what is allowed or not, but... Using services that are anathema to a distributed, decentralized, cryptographically keyed interoperable protocol.
So let's figure out options! I've started to try out ipfs. I'm already hitting up an error. I loaded up an image(of a dollar) can u check my profile? Can u tell me if you see it?
What is the problem with Cloudflare?
Everything. It is one of the worst centralizing influences on the internet, in the worst possible ways. The more sites are using their "free" services, the more of everything is filtered, monitored, steered, etc. It's bad and making the internet worse.
Freedom tech is popping up to move some web functions to the edge. There is enough power in edge devices now for much of the functionality we use on server now.
The holdup is still storage. This will come
Damnit. Thank you for sharing. Will stop immediately
I wanted to opt out of Cloudflare for my relay, but that would cost me 40000 sats a year and no one would reimburse me.
Then you're part of the problem with cloudflare. 🤷♂️
This is the most important conversation more people need to join in on.
Using centralizing, invasive platforms for convenience is antithetical to everything that most people who want personal liberty espouse, especially when the people using those platforms are setting themselves up to get rugged (or even jailed) when those services are inevitably weaponized against them, and then nostr at large.
Not seeing the obvious threat and capitulating to the impulse to do that easy thing is so friggin' frustrating to see in people who are otherwise smart and capable. I'm not very much of either, but I'm very attuned to various threats to my personal liberty. I do not want every single video or photo I post to be sent through cloudflare or MS servers. It is so friggin easy for that to be misused. That's the point. Value your data, your life more than a "free" service. I don't use windows. I de-googled my phone. I use mostly FOSS in putting my limited time and energy into things that are not actively trying to strip me off my humanity. I think all of you should, too.
