Actually, the world is divided into 24 main time zones that are each 15 degrees of longitude due to the fact that the earth rotates 15 degrees every hour.
The reason for the discrepancies is due to transportation, travel and communication within a specific area. Changing time would be too cumbersome if people are frequently traversing across the zones, so it's simpler to keep one that is uniform.

An inherent problem with taking the globe model as fact, is you need to maintain ridiculous levels of cognitive dissonance.
A perfect globe would have 24 equal time zones. People will will provide any reason why there are 30-some time zones in the northern hemisphere, and 20-some in the southern.
I trust more people will figure it out over time, at which point you will wonder how and why it took you so long.

One year I had New Year twice. I flew late night from New Zealand to LAX and crossed the dateline just after midnight. I thought the flight crew/cabin crew would think this worthy of note, but they were like "Meh".
