in order to promote healthy user behavior, push notifications are not enabled by default and users have fine tuned control over which notifications are shown

but we have to use external apps. can't amey do all of the process itself?
You can use 3 things:
1- Google Play in the usual way all other apps do, without any other do (obviously this requires the "Play" flavor of Amethyst.
2- Via UnifiedPush with ntfy and other apps like that.
3- Via Pokey which stays connected to your inbox servers and sends the events to Amethyst for the Notification.

Sorry to jump in here, but I've heard there are issues with privacy and google notifications. Would these notifications be encrypted using Google?
Yep, Google doesn't even see which keys you are logged in or which keys the encrypted message is for. All they have is a device token and they know when a message arrives. But they don't know what it is.
That's the way it should be, user activated

Be even cooler if notifications could be relayed by a self hosted nostr relay instead of an Apple server or Google Play Services.

It's so nice to see them rework the notification system, a much needed upgrade coming up big
everything is enabled for me on the Primal settings, and also the Notifications for Primal on my phone settings are allowed too, but I don't get the push notifications for some reason
