There’s this guy I had seen around town over the years but never spoke. He knew I was into Bitcoin and I knew he was into environmental activism.

We happened to run into each other and got to chatting. He seemed like a honest thinker and good conversationalist. He’s a biologist and I’m an engineer. We’re both thinking about systems, albeit from opposite ends.

Eventually we got into the Bitcoin topic. Specifically, its energy use. I mentioned how some companies are using the economics of mining to bring electricity to villages in Africa where it was not economically feasible before. I also mentioned that our civilization requires abundant energy for it to continue advancing technologically & socially.

He said he believed there were too many people on the planet and energy abundance would exacerbate this problem. I retorted with my firm belief that every person on Earth deserves access to energy. Anything less is a “fuck you, I got mines” attitude.

I don’t think anyone had said that to him before. He seemed shocked. And it seemed like he knew the argument was valid.

I hope he will rethink some of this before we run into each other again. Looking forward to another conversation with him.

Remember everyone, the best way to refine our position and beliefs is to have honest and open conversations with people we disagree with. No need to get angry, use it as an opportunity.

We ended our conversation with a smile and a handshake.

Whenever I encounter a Malthusian, I just ask them when do they plan to kill themselves and their children if they have them.

It's usually enough to cause a change of subject.

This graphic is their kryptonite.

They won’t even address it.

It’s too hard for neo-Malthusians / degrowthers / pieces of shit who don’t value humanity to actually confront this.

I maintain that we cannot live with these people. They need to be expelled from our society. We can’t just be having disagreements over something so central to our species survival.

Great one Fren thanks 👍😊

Best and most logical step forward for these genocidal freak retards is to start with themselves if the earth has too many people.

Mathusianism and the equating of energy usage with a lack of concern for the environment have been engrained in education. The world doesn’t have an overpopulation problem or an energy usage problem. It has a greed problem.

Access to Energy to an extent. One doesn’t need whole suns energy. Limits upper and lower. With time limits tends towards 100 yrs.

Environmentalost are hard to reason with because their base level assumption is that 'the planet' and it's wellbeing (whatever that means) are more important than the wellbeing of people.

Yep!

👏🏻🧡

When someone thinks human are the problem, and that energy abundance or anything that supports the proliferation of humans is bad, but they haven't killed themselves already, doesn't really believe that humans are bad for the planet.

So it usually is when talking face to face. A lot is missed when talking online. I regularly argue with my family over messages but in the flesh we have some great conversations and learn from each other.

Maybe this physical isolation was one intended consequence of lockdowns and masking.

Because of the difficulty adjustment, bitcoin is incentivized to use the cheapest electricity available. The cheapest electricity is waste, curtailed, and spare energy. When we experience hyperbitcoinization, bitcoin won’t create incremental energy supply … it will consume existing energy that otherwise wouldn’t be monetized.

But it’s also the most likely way to incentivize the development and production of new abundant power sources.
