Do you right a lightning node? If not, why not? #asknostr

Backup and bullshit low level channel management.

Heck yeah man. Had the honor of learning how to build one directly on top of Linux with CLN, best decision ever.

What are your thoughts on voltage?

expensive if hobby. good if for business at volume.

Had them for a year and a half , definitely worth it

No, I tried. It was frustrating. I didn't understand enough yet, time involved in managing, constantly losing money, etc.

What were you using?

LND & thunderhub, I think. It's was a couple years ago.

ah yeah, thunderhub feels a bit more advanced. I would love to make that UI simple -- maybe some day ;)

It was a bit much to jump straight into from zero.

Oh yeah, absolutely! It was hard for me to grasp too. I didn't even see the channel open button until yesterday lol

Figuring out how to balance channels was my achilles heel. I thought I had it, then went out to dinner & couldn't pay. 🀣 I quit that night.

I haven't had to do this yet. I don't really know how balancing works. I think it should happen automatically or let me press 1 button haha. That would be my goal as a product designer at least.

1 click would be nice. I thought it was simpler than it turned out to be. Fortunately closing was much more clear πŸ˜…

I've been debating on trying again, just to try the cashu mint on my phone thing... but I don't know. I'm pretty happy right now. πŸ˜…

You try Alby hub?

Not yet.

It's good! super simple. This is what I use mostly (with a mix of Thunderhub).

I'll keep that in mind, thanks!

They have a paid and a free self hosted version. I'm doing the self hosted via Umbrel, suuuper easy to install and practically nothing to set up. Absolute pleasure. Channel costs are expensive - but you can also just buy those on new magma - made that super easy!

No never have, always wanted to. Sounded painful - channel costs and balancing and finding channel partners. Sounded too hands-on for my life.

I'd try alby hub. Def some costs involved, but Magma makes it cheap to buy channels. Not sure about rebalancing - haven't had to do this.

I have an article in Stackchain magazine that walks you through how to set up a CLN node using Debian, how to set up tor, creating a script using inotify to watch the emergency.recover file and copy it to a mounted usb everytime a channel opens or closes. Setting up Bitcoin bitcoind and lightningd as system services.

Sorry I originally replied with the seed store account but I also have no problem sending anyone the text document if you really want to learn how. The article does so much more justice than the text document but it’s written with the commands there and a simple explanation of what you just did.

Yes

right a lightning node? you mean write?

run

I do. Have for years now. I never seemed to have the trouble others have with force-closed channels etc, but I am also only running my node for my own use, and so I have only a handful of channels, mostly with channel partners I know.

I can also see how running a lightning node isn't for everyone. It takes a lot of understanding of how lightning works, a lot of initial setup, and a fair amount of ongoing monitoring. Most people just want to send and receive sats without all that hassle.

Yes, small scale but going good for more than a year now!

Just don't run LND, my 0.02. if you're a beginner use AlbyHub good training wheels. Pay for it in the cloud so you can get support and learn. its a learning curve and you will lose funds, so start with that. Good luck.

I like CLN, phoenixd, albyhub. Its hard enough don't add extra to make it harder

Yess

Since january 2019, tho the node was recycled a few times since then (theres even an old Casa node on my desk atm for ppl around long enough to remember that)
