Don't have to throw them out - take them to a tailor and ask them to extend the pockets. The tailor did mine for like $10 per pair.

I've taken to only buying cargo pants or cargo shorts with this kind of small pocket on the front of the leg. It's the perfect size pocket for a phone and makes it easily accessible even when you're sitting down.

Adding a button would be pretty easy but sacrifices some convenience. Everything is a trade off. The comfort-convenience-security trilemma of shorts pockets.

Another option is shorts with zippers, but watch out for cheap as fuck zippers that will malfunction. YKK zippers are the best and there is no second best.

If you think guys pockets are awful, you should see girls pockets. They are much shorter and smaller and almost nothing fits in them. Probably half of girls clothing don't even have pockets

I 100% agree on buying clothes based on the pockets. I've found one brand of dresses that has huge, deep pockets that are wonderful. They are half of my wardrobe.
