Nostr clients should give me the option whether or not to download 3 GB worth of mobile data just to look at someone's profile page. Maybe I'm not interested to know what they have posted since the beginning of the universe, or waiting 3 hours to get an accurate picture of their follower count.

Which client? Relays limit the number of past events you get so this should already be the case
Amethyst for me. My phone basically freezes for a minute if I click on someone's profile.
Yes and yes.
Unless you have an unlimited data pack it's a think-twice-before-you-open act when using Nostr (often Amethyst in my case).
And even if you have unlimited data, the time it takes and the wonkyness until everything is in place and you can begin scrolling your feed ... isn't nice.

nostr is far too much client-heavy
nostr should be on the road to centralization (federalization) and AT Protocol on the road to decentralization
