Looking for a little #feedback. Trying something new. This was an idea for a quilted effect chess board. Still need to throw a border on it, sand it and topcoat it so this is far from a complete board. I think I like it but I'm not a player. If you play would the 3d effect bother you? Will you flood with epoxy so the chamfers get filled or do a tight coat so that you can feel the grooves if you want? Grain direction at 0/90 for the different colours is very nice. 👍
I'm thinking leave it light or even hardwax instead of epoxy so you can see and feel the effect but I'm open to input. Might even do a second board to try both ways. And yes! I love how the grain looked this way.

That said…I really like your table. In fact I sketched one similar to this about 30 years ago. My idea was to use a light-colored maple wood for the white pieces, and black walnut for the dark pieces. I don’t remember what I had in mind for the rest of it. I’m not a carpenter or furniture-maker, and I’ll am told I have a horrible sense of fashion & picking colors. So, I make no promises as to whether the colors go together… But I do like what I saw! Thank you for sharing!
The tiles here came from some spalted maple and walnut. It's actually always been my favorite wood combo for domestics.
it looks amazing but it would fill it in with something clear and make it flat. so you can keep the 3d look but still have it physically flat.
if your playing with a clock you want to be able to move quickly and any unevenness is going to slow you down a little bit and make the pieces slightly less stable.
Some would say it is a dust magnet and they aren’t wrong, but the texture and feel of the quilted pattern is appealing to me. I would keep it that way (as a chess player.)
I play, and this board looks great. Someone said that the uneven tiles would slow them down if they were playing quickly, but I think that style of chess is moreso meant for online play anyway (and moreso as time passes). Even if that bothered me, I’d still buy this as a decorative piece. Are you going to make pieces to accompany the board? Bc I’d pay for this in sats in a heartbeat.
I've never made peices before so I couldn't promise they would be worth buying. I could try though. Do you think wood, epoxy or 3d print? Personally I envision some blocky wood parts with radius to kinda match the style of the board. I'd be happy to give a set a go. I've still got enough of each wood to get them out of. Just let me know what you want to see and I'll give it a shot. No need to commit to buying if they aren't satisfactory. I'll still learn a thing or 2 making them.
I appreciate your initiative and think that’s a great attitude. Why don’t you DM me what you’d be willing to let go of the board for once you finish it, and from there we can decide if the pieces are feasible too. In terms of design for them, I would rather have whatever your vision is, and believe they’ll turn out best that way. Let me know
