Let's get a selfhosting thread going to inspire more people to selfhost services.

Start9 - Simplex server, monero node, nostr relay, Tor everything

Nothing. I don't have the time to maintain if I self host. So, I generally pay people to "self host" for me, like albyhub, nostr1.com, etc.

Not even pi-hole? No bitcoin node or ln node? Home Assistant?

No, I run Bitcoin core in my PC, but I am not sure that could as self host.

Well, it's technically selfhosted since you can communicate with the bitcoin network through your own node and not someone elses node but I agree, not the selfhosting I'm looking for. Pihole, btc node and CLN node has required extremely minimal maintenance. I log in and upgrade APT packages every now and then.

That said, it's good to know your limits on selfhosting. If you don't have time to maintain something, it's only going to be a bad experience.

Tell me a little about why id want a pi-hole, im curious about them

Google photos replacement!

Oh nice, need to check that out! How do you handle backups?

Backups? Hmm.. No, haven't set anything up yet. Any suggestions?

I don’t have any good suggestions, other than a NAS and some kind of remote storage in case of fire or floods. Would just suck loosing all the photos to natural disasters

I can recommend borgmatic. Backups are deduplicated, compressed, and encrypted (at rest & in transit).

I can share some scripts to set it up if people are interested.

Nice, would appreciate the scripts if you have some!

They're ansible roles, butnI haven't cleaned them up and made them public yet. I'll create a ticket now to remind me to do so in the foreseeable future.

Kopia seems to work faster for bigger datasets for me than borg

I admit is rather new and less battle tested

Borg has some options to make large backups more perform better. I'm not sure if that brings it up to parity or not though

I use restic. Works well for me right now

What is FreePBX?

VoIP phone system

Do you interface with POTS locally, through some provider, or not at all?

I'm interested in running FreePBX and want to know how people handle dealing with these legacy systems.

POTS is finished, it's all PSTN now. I do a SIP trunk with FlowRoute.com

I pay less than $2/mo for 2 numbers, unlimited extensions, voicemail, and IVR/ auto attendant.

You gotta pay extra to freepbx for SMS, and for the auto provisioning templates for specific hardware phones. But flowroute is like 10minutes per penny. Cheap af.

+ the usual bitcoin node stuff on start9

😅

Based! Also, Plex AND Jellyfin?

ive been sharing my library with friends and family using plex. im trying to migrate them to jellyfin so im running both.

Start9 which hosts my bitcoin node, Alby hub node, public pool for my Bitaxe, tor node, LLM server, and probably something else I’m forgetting.

I also run plex on my main computer.

I also have plans to build a suite of self hosted apps that are meant to help families fully own their data in a self sovereign way. Lots to do to get there, though 😅

What kind of LLM server are you hosting?

It’s just a start9 app called freeGPT. It’s very basic and slow but it’s private 🤷

Bitcoin Resarch Kit - a FOSS glassnode alternative

And of course a node

Everything. File browser, Nextcloud, Jellyfin, Bitcoin Knots, Electrs, Lightning Core node, LND node, and my own blog page.

The only thing I don't host is my Email.

And a Nostr Relay of course.

How do you handle Nextcloud backups?

I have a physical drive that I backup to. I schedule it every week or so.

I got a couple start9s running, self hosting as much as i can in my daily life with the help of those machines.

Looking forward to how your blossom drive project progresses. Would be really cool to have a media server i can host and run, then also farm out uncle jim style to my friends / family. Not sure if thats your goal but keep grinding and happy 4th 🤙

I don’t run Blossom Drive but I have built cherry-server which is a blossom server implementation. I’ve used it for many months, works flawlessly!

I see, hard for me grasp the nuances. Cherry server is a service i could run on my comp? Do i need to like proxy through a vps to use it ?

Thanks!

Yeah so cherry-server is the Blossom server implementation, and there is also Sakura which is a web app interface where you can manage the files you store on your blossom server.

You need to host blossom server somewhere public if you want others to see the memes you upload there, either on your server at home or using a public VPS.

public-pool for mining and grafana, prometheus for monitoring

Pretty much everything, from DNS on up.

What’s included in «everything»?

DNS, email, web, backup storage, Bitcoin, Lightning, DATUM/lottery mining, my massive music collection… Pretty much everything except a nostr relay, really. Though I do have some third-party services as backups to the backups, out-of-band email, etc.

Some of those are also things I host for others. Been doing that since the mid-90s.

More like what am I not hosting. ,😅

Top 3 apps you selfhost then?

Good question. Probably in terms of daily usage would definitely be DNS, my audio book server, And my calendar.

Audio book server? Tell me more

Audiobook shelf. Also worka for podcasts. I used openaudible to rip my entire audible collection. Now I buy audio books from not Amazon where I can and everything sits on my medianserver.

Nextcloud, Owncast, Peertube, Searx, Navidrome, GotoSocial, Node.

I’ve no idea what I’m doing and still can’t create a working Podcasting 2.0 set up.

> and still can’t create a working Podcasting 2.0 set up

Are you trying to set up your own podcast with podcasting 2.0?

Yes, via Peertube which should technically work but they never play in Fountain or Podverse (regular RSS type feeds work fine).

I have no idea about podcasting 2.0, maybe the folks over at nostr:npub1v5ufyh4lkeslgxxcclg8f0hzazhaw7rsrhvfquxzm2fk64c72hps45n0v5 can help you out?

Tried to build, but outside my LAN it has to be onion (both start9 and Unbrel) and that’s too slow 🤷🏼‍♂️
