Anyone here have thoughts on Keet? From a user perspective or a technical one?

I used it a bit when it came out, then just didn't have much context to use it for a bit, and lately found myself using it a bit more again.

I use it for file transfers between devices regularly.

Is this more private than using Signal or Simplex? Do they also have a native app specifically for data, or do you use the chat app?

Its a bit lacking when it comes to privacy currently, but vpn and you should be fine

Only tried one time few years ago, any new updates?

Its MUCH better. Except for their giant update yesterday that kind of broke it lol

I use it quite a bit to transfer files around between various devices. It works well for me.

Thats my main use case currently, and even that one tiny thing is SO helpful constantly. And links

If you can reach out to nostr:nprofile1qqstnem9g6aqv3tw6vqaneftcj06frns56lj9q470gdww228vysz8hqprpmhxue69uhhyetvv9ujumt0d4hhxarj9ecxjmntqyfhwumn8ghj7ctvvahjuat50phjummwv5c48yxn , he seems to be the one I’ve heard talk about this the most.

Use it regularly for private / sensitive conf calls. It gets confused occasionally when joining a room but overall find the AV quality very good. Kinda taking Paolo’s word for the security of the technical parts to date.

It's pretty fun on a windy day, just don't unspool the thread to much or use it on a stormy day or near electrical overhead wiring.

Don't know why your pronouncing it like that though.

Also used it for audio chat US-Japan. Again no issues.

I did run wireshark on it once and didn’t see anything that looked obviously suspicious, but you should take that with a grain of salt.

My understanding is that it can be bad for privacy. You leak your ip address to anyone you interact with

More of an issue with the internet than anything, its p2p after all. Although im sure some interesting routing could be implemented to benefit privacy, but that would be a further down the line thing. Theyre still frequently rebuilding core components

Good to know.

I've only been using with people I know closely. My context is that I find it to be the least-laggy way to have a video call from separate continents. Feels more like an in-person convo.

My understanding is that you make a direct connection with the person so it should have a lot less latency

Not quite, from what ive seen. Ran wireshark during a video call, and seemed to be routed through some generic google servers. The DHT should just be for connecting, so every single packet shouldnt have came from that IP from my understanding. Wasnt able to get a good answer from Maf about it

It opens you up to fails in their opsec in addition to intentional attacks by them. Easy to forget that part.

Its so much better than it was before, and I love it. They practically broke it with yesterdays update, but aside from that I wish it could be my only messaging app

I use it just to send stuff to myself mostly.I think it's still has some bugs but I would rather use Keet that telegram.

I use Keet primarily to share large files between my own devices. New phone? Add it to the "my devices" chatroom. File sharing is ready to go.

I have used it for video calls a few times too, and found it was top notch video quality.

No open source afaik. No bueno.

🎯

I tried a couple of group chats with it. Awful. Missing messages that never load were a constant problem.

The UI of needing to wait for upload to complete before closing but not confirming upload is a terrible experience for non technical people. They send and close and no one ever gets it.

Keet is an interesting step toward truly decentralized communication, leveraging Holepunch’s P2P tech to remove reliance on central servers. From a technical perspective, the use of Distributed Holepunching for NAT traversal is impressive, ensuring direct peer-to-peer connections without intermediaries.

However, adoption challenges remain. Without a larger user base, network effects are limited, and the UX still has room for improvement—especially in onboarding non-technical users. That said, as censorship resistance and privacy concerns grow, Keet’s architecture positions it well for long-term relevance. Curious to see how it evolves. What’s your experience been like?

It's closed source !!! So no one knows what happens with our privacy behind the scene

Sounds great, if they'd open source it.

They promised to open source it by (from memory) the end of ... 2022. They haven't yet. I lost interest. Simplex works well.
