"Monetary activity will out compete spam for block space."

This is a baseless assertion made by the moderates. (They are moderates because they are at least prepared to admit spam exists and that it is bad).

You can get 85 thousand computers to store your data for free. Forever! Or at least until they get sick of doing it.

Unless Bitcoiners work *extremely hard* to make leeching off the network as cumbersome and expensive as possible, spammers *will* turn Bitcoin's blockchain into a mechanism for storing unwanted data on the computers of unpaid volunteers.

The fact that we can't even update spam filters without a fight tells anyone paying attention that Bitcoin is being stewarded by people who don't understand how it can be attacked, let alone how they might go about defending it.

I like the gist but I'm not sure I agree with the unpaid volunteer schtick.

Most of us are incentivized to run a node, it's in our best interest to verify our self custody.

Very weak. The sad truth is if I send you some Bitcoin and your wallet (using some third party back end) tells you you received it, you're not insane to just trust it.

Telling people to run nodes largely became a virtue signal as they wouldn't actually use them for anything - giving rise to the whole "economic node" meme.

It's not super terrible because there are enough Umbrels/Start9 people out there who can trivially run Lightning nodes on top of their Bitcoin nodes and electrum servers etc.

But still, the UX of node-less Bitcoining is pretty much fine and it's nowhere near easy enough for us to laugh Saylor out of the room for calling us "Paranoid crypto anarchists" for insisting on it.

Opt in opt out. Isn’t freedom great!

Get some rest bud.

Hi, I appreciate what you say.

A big part of the fight against spam is to convince hashers to point their power at a mining pool which also blocks spam, like Ocean DATUM.

You can also use this argument when others say "the miners will mine spam anyway".

Ocean DATUM is also made by Luke Dash, and promoting it more frequently would surely help!

Compelling argument. What version do you run?

Bitcoin Knots

Love your analysis. Been watching your interviews on YouTube. I think you do make a very good point. We don't need all that spam shit on Bitcoin. ⚡

1. To understand this, it is enough to look at the activity of bitcoiners in the blockchain now. I call such activity pre-death.

2. We can build network security based on: a) predictions of human behavior and b) technical protocols that do not depend on their whims. Satoshi chose the second path. And our historical experience confirms that this path is the right one.

3. Scammers know the rule: it is easier to eat a big pie from the edges. This is their tactic. This is how they destroyed the gold standard: not all at once, but gradually, biting off small pieces step by step until there is nothing left of our pie. Our answer to spammers should be crystal clear: go fuck yourself.

Just propose a consensus change already and quit whining about it

The consensus change is coming from Bitcoin core devs. Forcing through an update for Core node runners to limit the control they have over their own node software. Sound familiar yet? Sounds like something from the fiat system doesn’t it?

Ok. Then I can safely pee in their water supply because all they and the rest of the neighbors just need to do is open the taps more. Then the flow rate of the water will reduce the specific amount of urea and they will be safe. This will really solve the problem because I alone will not be able to pee faster and more often...

Unless I call other slackers for help...

Monetary activity can never out compete spam, the same as shitcoins will never die.

Some will go. New will grow. Like weed in your garden, it will keep growing.

I’ve always been a moderate, and I’m switching to Knots. Because I’m an egoistic economic actor.

I am also very suspicious of the paternalistic (we’ll decide for you), aggressive (just propose a consensus rule change) and defeated (we can’t stop it anyhow) approach of Core.

But honestly, the good thing about being a pleb is that I’m not tied to any reputation I need to maintain. I’ll be equally critical when listening to both sides moving forward. No shame in being wrong.

I also like watching Bitcoin’s resilience real-time

Peace 🧡

Yeah, "Monetary activity will out compete spam for block space." always seemed like a bit of hopium to me.

In an ideal world, node software would be so diversified that the state of spam filters wouldn't have a de facto set of 'stewards'. Fortunately, it doesn't seem that the state of spam filters is yet an existential threat. To me, the fight ought to be to move in the direction of a more ideal state of node software diversification... in order to render the fight re:spam filters moot before it becomes necessary.

Let's keep filtering spam

Define monetary activity

Right now, spammers are getting what they want by inserting garbage into the blockchain, miners are getting what they want---which is compensation for putting garbage into the chain, but node runners are not getting anything for their work.

Utilizing storage, memory, and electricity is work. There are opportunity costs---node runners could have been using that storage, memory, and electricity for other tasks. But they choose to do the work, paying for it out of their own pockets, to uphold the decentralization and integrity of the Bitcoin Network.

The system has been abusing their volunteer work for about three years now. The costs have risen rapidly. You cannot just easily use an old machine you would have discarded or a cheap, low powered device like Raspberry Pi. Pruning has become a necessity for most people.

There is no way to transfer a part of the economic benefits from the spammers and miners to the node runners. It's callousness to assume node runners will continue to put up with this indefinitely.

Switch to Knots. Core is compromised.

The idea of getting free storage on 85,000 computers is wild. In the real world, nothing is free. Just the annual maintenance cost for any decent boat for sale https://www.yachttrading.com/ would make these spammers' heads spin. Great argument for making leeching painful.
